Alleged N1tn diversion: Senate to probe Lamorde’s alleged diversion of N1tn

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions will on Wednesday begin a probe of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, over an allegation that he fraudulently diverted over N1tn proceeds of corruption recovered by the anti-graft agency.

Part of the money alleged by a petitioner to have been diverted by the EFCC boss included the loot recovered from a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha; and ex-Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun.

The petitioner, Mr. George Uboh, whose complaint to the Senate prompted the probe, has been invited to appear before the Senate committee at Meeting Room 120 of the New Senate Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, by 10am on Wednesday.

Similar invitation, it was learnt, had been extended to Lamorde to appear before the Senate committee the same time on Wednesday.

The fraud allegedly perpetrated by Larmode was said to have dated back to his days as the Director of Operations of the EFCC between 2003 and 2007, as well as an acting Chairman of the commission between June 2007 and May 2008, when the then chairman of the anti-graft agency, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, was away for a course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

Uboh, Chief Executive Officer of Panic Alert Security Systems, a security firm, in his petition dated July 31, 2015, accused Lamorde of some specific instances of under-remittance and non-disclosure of proceeds of corruption recovered from criminal suspects, including   Balogun and Alamieyeseigha.

He assured the Senate that he would produce “overwhelming evidence” to back his claims against Lamorde.

Uboh also alleged that the EFCC had not accounted for “offshore recoveries” and that “over half of the assets seized from suspects are not reflected in EFCC exhibit records”.

The petitioner equally accused Lamorde of conspiring with some EFCC officers and external auditors “to operate and conceal a recovery account in the Central Bank of Nigeria and excluded the balances from your audited financial statements between 2005 and 2011”.

“Lamorde continues to conceal the details of the unsold properties forfeited by both Tafa Balogun and DSP Alamieyeseigha despite receiving rent revenues from some estate agents on the said properties,” he further alleged.

Alamieyeseigha, the man who former President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded as Bayelsa State governor in 2005, had forfeited property and funds in various bank accounts as part of terms of plea bargain in his trial by the EFCC.

He had pleaded guilty to six counts of corruption charges before a Federal High Court in Lagos on July 26, 2007 and served concurrent two years imprisonment on each count, though he was later pardoned by Jonathan in 2013.

Balogun had also forfeited landed assets and funds and was sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja after he pleaded guilty to various counts of corruption charges.

Uboh, asked that Lamorde be prosecuted and proposed 10 counts of fraud in his petition, which was addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki, through the Delta State Senator in the National Assembly, Peter Nwaoboshi.

In the petition bearing Nwaobohi’s acknowledgment, Uboh alleged that Lamorde in March 2013 diverted the sum of N779m out of the total N3bn forfeited by Balogun to the Federal Government and that the EFCC boss conspired with some officials of the anti-graft agency to under-remit the ex-IG’s forfeited funds of about N5.85bn into the Consolidated Revenue Account by holding back about N2.65bn.

Uboh also alleged that Lamorde conspired with some EFCC officials to remit to Bayelsa State the sum of N3.1bn instead of the total sum of N4.3bn proceeds of corruption recovered from Alamieyeseigha.

The petitioner said that Lamorde, as Director of Operations of the EFCC, conspired with some officers of the commission to manipulate records of assets recovered from Alamieyeseigha, an act which allegedly paved the way for him to trade with about N3.7bn of the recovered funds for almost two years.

“Sir, the aggregate funds diverted by Lamorde/EFCC stated below in the attached criminal charges is over N1tn. However, because over 95 per cent of overseas seizures are diverted, there is an urgent need to investigate and recover those funds as well,” Uboh’s petition read in part.

Our correspondent, on Sunday, obtained a copy of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions’ letter, which was signed by the committee’s clerk, Freedom Osolo, inviting Uboh to the Wednesday’s meeting.

The letter of invitation entitled, ‘Invitation to a meeting of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions’, partly read, “I am directed to invite you to a meeting of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions of the National Assembly in respect of your petition (copy attached) against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde.”

“You are by this invitation, required to appear before the committee with all necessary evidence to support your allegation,” the invitation letter also noted.

Part of the proposed charges prepared by Uboh read, “That you Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, as the executive chairman of EFCC in March 2013, in the bid to conceal a fraud of N779,155,004:62, being the diverted amount from the forfeited funds by Tafa Balogun, falsified documents in response to the request made on you by duly constituted authorities, wherein you fraudulently stated the total of 13 bank balances as N2,258,100,576:98 instead of N3,037,255,521:60

“That you Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, as the Director of operations, conspired with some officers in the EFCC to manipulate the forfeitures and recoveries from DSP Alamieyesiegha, which events took place between 2006 and 2007, as if it took place in July 2008, with a view to shifting responsibilities to the regime or tenure of Mrs. Farida Waziri. By this act, you traded with recoveries amounting to over N3.7 bn for almost two years before formerly documenting the transaction.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said, “I am not aware of it (the petition).”

This came as a 42-year-old man, identified as Bala, was arrested by police in Oyo State for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in Ibadan. On the Ajegunle incident, the victim (names withheld ) told policemen that the suspect, who is her late father’s friend, had had carnal knowledge of her twice.

The little girl gave a graphic description of how her late father’s friend, whose identity was given simply as Ayela, had carnal knowledge of her in his apartment located on Mission Street. She disclosed that the suspect had on both occasions called her into his apartment while she was running errands for her grandmother and that at the end of the assault, gave her N50.

The bubble burst weekend, after a curious woman, who sighted the little girl coming out of the suspect’s apartment, reportedly asked her what happened behind closed door.

Her revelation, it was gathered, led to the invitation of policemen and subsequent arrest of the suspect. However, the suspect denied the allegation, but admitted to have offered the girl money each time he saw her because of the relationship he had with her late father. He said: “How can I rape my late friend’s daughter? They live on Ayorinde Street, while I live at Mission Street.

“Any time I see her passing by, I usually gave her money. Sometimes she comes to say hello. On this day, she just opened my door without knocking. I swear I did not rape her.”

Girl’s story

The girl interrupted him, saying: “He is lying. He did it sometime ago. This is not the first time. It is the second time.” The girl, according to police sources, had been taken to the hospital for examination. The outcome of the result, which is expected to be out today, police sources hinted, would inform the next line of action on the matter.

The Ibadan incident happened at Ago Tapa, Mokola area of the metropolis. Vanguard gathered that the suspect allegedly lured the girl into his room and forced himself on her. According to sources, Bala enticed the naive girl with N100.

The girl’s mother was said to have noticed blood stains on her dress, which prompted her to question her. The victim told her mother how the suspect deceived her into his one room apartment and raped her. Sensing that the bubble had burst, the suspect was said to have escaped when he heard the voice of the enraged victim’s mother, who was heading towards his room.

Arrested

The incident was later reported at Mokola Police Station and the suspect was arrested last Thursday. Vanguard was further informed that the latest rape case was not the first by the suspect. The man, father of two girls and a boy, was said to be fond of defiling minors in the area. The source said earlier in the year, he defiled a six-year-old girl, but with persistent plea by the suspect and his wife as well as payment of N30,000 for his victim’s treatment, the matter was swept under the carpet.

Cat photographed in desperate bid to escape from Chinese butcher is saved by American animal shelter

A cat used one of its nine lives after a charity saved it from being slaughtered by a Chinese butcher.

The controversial Yulin Dog and Cat Meat Festival in China claims the lives of thousands of stray or stolen animals each year.

This year, a small white cat was photographed climbing the side of the horrific slaughterhouse enclosure, while dozens of other felines sat in the overcrowded space.

However the Human Society International's rescue workers made sure that her life did not end there after spotting the cat named Huru

Huru will spend some time adjusting to her new life and then be looking for a loving family.

According to the Humane Society, as many as 10million dogs are killed for food annually in China, with up to 10,000 killed for the Yulin festival.

The 'festival' is held to mark the beginning of the summer solstice and was created in 2010 as a way for dog meat traders to boost their flagging business.

Many of the dogs and cats slaughtered are stolen pets who are transported to the event site over several days, often without food and water, according to the Humane Society.

Plano police officer faces disciplinary action after video emerges of him telling teen driver to stop smiling

A Plano police officer may face disciplinary action after a video from May shows him telling a teenage driver to stop smiling while pulled over, and later shouting an expletive at the driver and his passengers.

The video, only a minute and 18 seconds long, was uploaded to Facebook in May. It isn’t clear in the video why the officer, identified by Plano police as Jeff Willis, stopped the teens.

The teen driver did not immediately respond to The News’ request seeking comment. He told CBS 11 that the officer pulled him over at a car meet near the Dallas North Tollway and Spring Creek Parkway and accused one of his passengers of showing him the middle finger.

At the start of the video, Willis tells the driver he needs to leave and then tells him to stop smiling.

Later, the officer tells the youngsters they’ll spend more time with him if he sees them again.

“What did I do?” one of the passengers asks.

“I don’t know. I just don’t like you, I just don’t like you,” the officer says.

The teens start laughing, telling him: “Have a great day, officer.”

The officer then responds with an expletive.

“Keep going. Say something else and I’ll drag you out of the car,” he says as he walks away.

Plano police spokesman David Tilley said the department launched an internal investigation soon after it was posted on Facebook.

Investigators concluded today that disciplinary action should be taken against Willis, Tilley said.

But, Tilley said, he couldn’t go into details because Willis can appeal the punishment.

A Facebook post from Aug. 9 shows a different side of Willis: A photo of him handing out police stickers to boys who were eating at a Chik-fil-A.

Before he joined the Plano police department in 2002, Willis was a lieutenant commander in the Navy. He was awarded the Joint Commendation medal for his military service in Cambodia, according to the Plano Police Department’s Facebook page.

Mrs Omogbene Adeborile, 65, the the mother-in-law to Oba Fredrick Obateru-Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugboland, has been kidnapped in Igbotako, Ondo State. Adeborile was abducted on Saturday at her residence in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State at about 10:00 p.m.

Adeborile who is also the wife of Chief Babatunde Adeborile, Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Igbotako Ward II , was carted away by at least eight gunmen.

Oba Akinruntan who was ranked the second richest monarch in Africa and first in Nigeria is believed to be worth around $300 million. He is also the founder of Obat Oil, one of Nigeria’s largest privately-held oil trading companies

Help in the fight against corruption- Buhari appeals to lawyers

President Buhari yesterday appealed to lawyers in Nigeria to assist in his administrations fight against corruption.
President Buhari who made the appeal while speaking at the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja, said corruption is the main reason why Nigeria is where it is at the moment.


He stressed that in putting an end to the menace of corruption, Nigeria needs lawyers that will never sacrifice the integrity of the legal system to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be.
 

"I am convinced that law, lawmakers, lawyers, law courts and the law enforcement agencies all have pivotal responsibilities to discharge, if the change we seek is ever to materialise. 

This administration has taken on the challenge of improving security, fighting corruption and revamping the economy, among many others.

The fight against corruption is a struggle for the restoration of law and order. Corruption and impunity become widespread when disrespect for law is allowed to thrive in society.

Disrespect for law thrives when people get away with all sorts of shady deals and the court is unable to check them. Ability to manipulate and frustrate the legal system is the crowning glory of the corrupt and, as may be expected, this has left many legal practitioners and law courts tainted in an ugly way.

In a gathering such as this, I do not need to elaborate on the way that corruption and impunity have damaged our economy. But I would like to say more on what, I believe, should be your role as legal practitioners, in helping us back to the path of rectitude.

First, we need to make our courts functional and effective again. This means that we must have lawyers who take the ethics of the profession very seriously; lawyers who will not frustrate the course of justice, even though they defend their clients with all legitimate means and resources.

Nigeria needs ethical lawyers who always keep the end of justice in mind and will never sacrifice the integrity of the legal system to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be."he said

Woman condemned to death for killing lover’s children

Leavell-Keaton was convicted for the 2010 killing of Natalie and Chase DeBlase, who were aged four and three respectively.

Judge Roderick P. Stout sentenced Leavell-Keaton to death after the jury in a 75 minutes presentation described how she and her husband, the children’s father, John DeBlase, who had earlier been sentenced to death for the same crimes in 2014, murdered the children.

In his ruling, Stout said the convict failed to protect the children from “needless suffering and death and unexplainable malice.”

According to prosecutors, in March 2010, one of the deceased, Natalie was duct-taped and placed in a suitcase which was set in a closet for 12 hours, adding that the deceased corpse was later dumped in a wooded area near Citronelle.

Chase was killed in June 2010, having been taped to a broom handle and left in the corner of the couple’s bedroom overnight. He was also choked to death, according to testimony, and his body was found in the woods outside Vancleave, Mississipi.

Prosecutors told the court that the convict was jealous of Natalie because friends and family members called her a princess, adding that Leavell-Keaton murdered Chase after he started asking about the where-about of Natalie.

Nine persons arrested for rape, theft in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command says it has apprehended five alleged rapists and four other suspects over criminal conspiracy, theft and vandalism.

The Command’s spokesperson, Mr. Zubairu Abubakar made this revelation on Friday in Kaduna stressing that the alleged rapist committed the act in Rigasa area of Kaduna town.

Abubakar disclosed that the suspects were nabbed on August 19, after the victim’s parents complained to the police.

Among the suspects, were two who raped a 13-year-old girl, while three others raped a 20-year-old girl. Two other suspects involved in the act are at large.

“The victims were taken to Rigasa General Hospital and the medical reports have confirmed that they were raped,’’ Abubakar affirmed.

He further revealed that the other four suspects were apprehended for criminal conspiracy, vandalism and theft.

The Command’s spokesperson disclosed that the Regional Manager of Forlknox, Mr. Musa Usman, had on August 13, reported to the police that some unknown persons were vandalising the company’s property.

After the complaint, the police took immediate action and arrested the four suspects with five 4KVA generators belonging to the company,” Abubakar averred.

According to Abubakar, all the nine suspects will be charged to court soon.

Dog Eats Up 4 -month-old Baby In Delta State

Tragedy struck on Friday in Asaba, Delta State, when a 37-year-old house wife, Maureen Akowe, a graduate of sociology from the state-owned university allegedly lost her four-month-old baby to her dog.

It was gathered that the four- month-old baby was driven in the mother’s car alongside the dog to a popular supermarket along Okpanam Road, Asaba, where the house wife had gone for shopping for the baby’s upkeep.

Report says the unsuspecting nursing mother left the baby, a nanny and the dog inside the car and wound down the windows to allow ventilation into the car before moving into the supermarket.

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered from witnesses that while she was busy shopping, the dog allegedly made straight for the little baby to eat her up while the nanny screamed for help but all to no avail.

The shouts by the nanny attracted two security personnel at the supermarket to the car but by which time the baby, identified as Chinonso, had been bitten severally on the stomach by the dog, leaving the baby in a pool of blood.

The dog had gone wild and was barking menacingly to scare onlooker by the time the baby’s mother got wind of the development and rushed to the scene.

The baby was taken to a nearby hospital along Nnebisi Road, but it was too late by the time they got to the hospital as the baby, the woman’s first child, had already died.

the efforts of the helpers who had wanted to rescue the little baby failed as the baby gave up the ghost before getting to the hospital.

Speaking with the nanny who claimed to have hailed from one of the states in the eastern part of the country and did not want her name in the print said “Madam carry the dog and baby and asked us to stay inside the car, because the dog was to be treated at the veterinary, suddenly I saw the dog moving closer to the baby and I shouted for help when the dog opened its teeth and I ran out of the car to call madam but she did not come on time”.

Family sources said that the house wife had been married for 3 years without a baby before she took in for the baby that was delivered and named Chinonso.

In a swift reaction, the husband of the woman amidst tears, and did not want his name on the print said “my wife said it is the devil’s work and the devil’s work will take her out of my house, I have warned her about the dog when I notice that the dog had been behaving funny. She still kept carrying the dog claiming that she was going to give treatment to the dog. This is how the devil had ruined her”.

The war on corruption is the greatest source of excitement to Nigerians at this moment. Nigerians have come to the conclusion that this war has to be waged if this country must survive and take its place in the dignified comity of nations. Nigerians believe that this war on corruption is very necessary if there is any hope for Nigeria to live up to its promise to its citizens. In fact, some believe that if the war on corruption could be successfully waged in a fair, balanced and equitable manner, it might reduce the strong ethnic loyalties preeminent among most Nigerians, and buoy a sense of genuine patriotism to Nigeria.

Though, I do not subscribe to this school of thought – that it might reduce the strong ethnic loyalties among most Nigerians – I am willing to entertain it, at the level of fantasy. But I am unwilling to think of it as a probability. Regardless, I am of the view that whatever that would help make Nigerians sincerely committed to building the country is worth the effort and support of all and sundry. For someone like me, who believes that Nigeria has the higher probability of being Balkanized, this war on corruption would determine whether Nigeria could and would be saved.

Nigeria has stopped breathing. It has been bludgeoned for the last 55 years. This war on corruption is the last cardiopulmonary resuscitation for Nigeria as a country. Hopefully, it would be able to gasp for breath, come back alive and be able to have stable breathing process, be strong enough and rise up to the tasks of being a meaningful country. It is essential that this happened. For anyone who has any iota of belief in this country as an entity; anyone that believes that this country has the potential to be excellent and viable; for anyone that believes that Nigeria is really worth it for all its challenges, this is the time to stand up and be counted.

This is why President Muhammadu Buhari has a very great decision to make. He has to make up his mind. Does he want to be just another politician who became the president of Nigeria? Or does he want to be a statesman and truly build a new Nigeria that history would ascribe to him? Does he have the courage to be courageous? Is he willing and able to jettison the corrupt elements that brought him to power and face them down? Is he willing and able to really rock the boat and shake up the system? Does he have the courage and competence to change the course of Nigeria from perdition to paradise? Does he have the courage to call the bluff of the enemies of the country who have been holding the country hostage for all these decades?

Would President Buhari reward corrupt members of his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) as members of his cabinet? Would he prefer “political correctness” over the viability of this country? Would President Buhari betray the war on corruption and have looters in his cabinet to govern this country in the name of party loyalty and “political correctness”? Would he be selective in this war against corruption? Would President Buhari be able to call the bluff of looter – governors who bought jets from their meager allocation to their states? Would he be impeded in his moral judgment on behalf of Nigeria because he believes he owe such a governor something because he was allowed to fly around in such a jet during his election campaign?

Would President Buhari have enough courage to face down any accused member of APC and ask them to step back or step aside from his government? Would he have the courage to prosecute some of, if not all of his friends? Would the war of corruption be waged against the members of the opposition alone? Does President Buhari take the integrity of this war on corruption very seriously? Does he care how this war on corruption is perceived beyond his immediate circles? Does he really care about the success of this war on corruption by exuding enough determination to be fair, balanced and equitable? Is President Buhari really up to the task of waging this war against corruption in terms of the needed courage to see it through?

If one may ask the President, in view and in lieu of the variety of allegations flying around former Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Babatunde Fashola, Rochas Okorocha, Kayode Fayemi, Rabiu Kwankwanso and the rest of them, would any of these find a place in the Government of Change? If any of these governors find a place in President Buhari’s cabinet, would the CHANGE the people voted for still remain uncompromised? If any of these governors find any place in the cabinet or the periphery of this government, would President Buhari still be able to claim to be engaged in any serious war against corruption? Should Nigerians still believe in President Buhari as a man of integrity if he has alleged crooks in his cabinet?

Would President Buhari have the audacity to search all the nooks and crannies of this country for honest, dedicated, committed and capable Nigerians to help him pilot this country closer to its potentials? Or would he succumb to the pressure of the looters of our commonwealth within his party? Would the president be more loyal to his party than to the country? How many alleged crooks would be part and parcel of this administration simply because they are party members?

As we speak right now, Senator Bukola Saraki remains an embarrassment to this administration. He remains a poignant sore in the heart of the CHANGE Nigerians are seeking. By all definitions, Senator Saraki is an undesirable politician who has dug a hole on the balustrade of the Nigerian political mansion. He represents the reeking pit in the pith of the pedestal of Nigerian politics. President Buhari has not been able to do anything about him up till this moment. Senator Saraki as the President of Nigerian Senate is the number one reason why people began to doubt the sincerity of President Buhari’s war on corruption.

President Buhari has succeeded in dividing Nigerians with his response to the emergence of Senator Saraki as the President of the Senate. He told Nigerians that he did not want to intervene in the affairs of the Nigerian Congress. He also promised to work with whoever emerged as the leaders of the Congress. To this end, President Buhari had insisted that he had no hand in Senator Saraki’s emergence. But the circumstances of Saraki’s emergence do not bear this out. President Buhari’s quiet acquiescence to Saraki’s emergence is also deafening. So, Nigerians are not unanimous about their expectations of President Buhari in regard to the headache that Senator Saraki represents as Senate President and the embarrassment he represents to Nigeria locally and internationally, especially as an alleged certified bank robber.

Would President Buhari deliberately undermine his own war against corruption by appointing corrupt faithfuls into his cabinet? Would President Buhari create further doubts about his sincerity in regard to this war against corruption by appointing alleged crooks into his cabinet just for political correctness or party loyalty? Would the Amaechis of this world, the Fasholas of this world, the Okorochas of this world, the Fayemis of this world be the faces of the CHANGE that Nigerians demanded with their vote? Would President Buhari remain faithful to Nigeria and Nigerians? Time will tell.

Landlord’s daughter bites off tenant’s ear over electricity bill

THERE was pandemonium, weekend, at Oba Market Benin, as a 23-year-old hair dresser, Miss Faith Idehen, had her left ear bitten off in an attack by the daughter of her landlord, identified as Vivian, over electricity bill.

It was learned that trouble started when Vivian, a single mother of two, demanded for N1,500, being monthly payment for electricity bill from Faith.

The tenant’s plea that she did not have up to that amount, but deposited N1,000 with a promise to pay the balance of N500 later in the day, fell on deaf ears.

The victim was said to have left the compound and boarded a commercial bus to her place of work at Oba Market. Vivian allegedly trailed and caught up with her at the popular Yanga Fish Market and pounced on her. A fight started.

Faith was reported to have fainted as she bled profusely from her left ear before passers-by and onlookers rescued her from the grip of her attacker, who threatened to deal with her entire family.

The assailant was eventually arrested by men of Oba Market Police Station after a 24-hour siege was laid to her residence by the police.

The victim recounted her ordeal: “I did not know that I was being trailed, even after I pleaded that I will pay the balance of N500 when I returned from work. 

“The moment I alighted from the bus, I heard someone calling my name repeatedly. I turned and behold it was Vivian. She grabbed my hair and started beating me.

“Before I knew what was happening, I saw my ear dangling with blood gushing out. I was later rescued and rushed to the Central Hospital where it was later stitched back on.”
A Police source at Oba Market Division said the suspect would be charged to court for alleged assault and attempted murder.

Jungle justice :Man set ablaze for stealing pot of soup in Calabar

A mob in Calabar, Cross River State capital, yesterday, butchered a young man and set the remains on fire beside Atu Secondary School fence along Goldie Street, for allegedly robbing a woman of a pot of soup. His two accomplices escaped.

The hoodlum, in the company of two others, were alleged to have attacked the woman at Mayne Avenue Extension in Calabar South.

They were allegedly attracted by the aroma of the soup the woman was warming for her family’s breakfast before heading for early morning mass at nearby St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

A young man, who lives in the same premises with the lady, said as the robbers were about to get out of the compound with the pot of soup, the woman raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to go after them. They caught up with the one carrying the pot of soup and dealt him several machete cuts before setting him ablaze.

An eyewitness said: “It was almost dawn when the boys attacked the woman and carried away her pot of soup. When they were about getting out of the compound, she raised alarm and people came out, pursued and caught up with one.”

He said the boy was not able to run as fast as his accomplices because of the pot of soup he refused to drop.

The eyewitness said: “This is not the first time they have come to our compound to steal. Last week, they removed the car battery of one of our neighbours and once night falls, they waylay people, especially ladies, around Goldie by Atu and snatch their handbags and phones.”

At press time, there was no sign of security agents in the area, while the burnt body was still lying by Atu Secondary School fence.

Couple having sex on walls of castle in northern France fall to their deaths

The bodies of the two men were found naked in the partially dry moat surrounding the Vauban Fort in northern France on Thursday morning.
Their belongings were found on the battlements 40ft above, leading police to believe they were having sex when they fell.
One 31-year-old man was found in the dry part of the moat, while his partner was discovered shortly after in water only 5ft deep.

Both men are believed to be from Normandy and were on a holiday visiting the castle when the accident occurred.

France's Le Figaro paper quoted a police source as saying the men were probably 'making love - and something went wrong'.

A 34-year-old widow and mother of four in Egwudunagu village, Amachi community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Ogodo Egede has allegedly been raped to death by one Alex Nwabu, a 40-year-old man in the area.

Nwabu, who allegedly committed the act in the deceased house in the night, was said to have been having constant affair with the widow with a threat to kill her if she dared disclose it to anyone.
The poor widow, who depended on artisan work to carter for her children, was seen with bruises all over her motionless body following the incident.
A family source told our reporter that when the suspect continued the act, the widow’s daughter, a 13-year-old girl was forced by Nwabu to leave the house for threatening to expose him.

‘’The girl ran to her grandparents in the night because Nwabu threatened to kill her. She came to greet her mother in the morning only to see that she was dead and was covered with a wrapper.
‘’The girl went and informed the grandfather that her mother is dead. She had reported Nwabu’s action to her grandfather,” the source added.
The youths of the area then mobilised a search party for the suspect on hearing his alleged action and later found him in his father’s compound.
On interrogation, he admitted committing the crime.
Nwabu said: “Mrs. Ogodo was owing me N1, 500 and when I visited her for the payment she refused. I actually asked her for sex and she also refused. I later used force on her and I did not know she will die because I didn’t want to kill her.

‘’But she struggled with me which annoyed me and I beat her up, I had sex with her for several hours.”

Speaking on the incident, the widow’s father, Chief Ogbonna Ogayi said his granddaughter ran to him in the night and reported that Nwabu came to their house and started harassing her mother with a cutlass.

The Nigerian Police have arrested 37 year old Ajiboye Oluwaseyi, for allegedly raping his two daughters a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old and his 15 year old stepdaughter in the Lekki area of Lagos  state.

It was gathered that Oluwaseyi, who hails from Ondo State, was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, after his wife reported the matter to the police.

It was learnt that Oluwaseyi, who worked as a Lotto agent, had separated from his wife in December 2014.

He was said to have taken the 2 girls from his wife, leaving her with a baby (the 3rd child) and allegedly convinced his stepdaughter, Simbi (not her real name) to stay with him.

It was learnt that Simbi had allegedly been raped many times before she opened up to a neighbour, who reported the matter to the mother who went to a non-governmental organisation to report the sexual abuse of her daughter.

 

The police were informed and they in turn arrested Oluwaseyi and also took the 3 girls for medical tests which confirmed that Simbi had been raped on several occasions, while Oluwaseyi's two daughters had also been defiled.

 

The suspect's wife said she left her husband to avoid an untimely death.

She added that Oluwaseyi refused her access to her daughters until the NGO and the police got involved.

She said:

"We were staying together in the Lekki Phase 1 area. My 15-year-old daughter, whom I had for another man, and the two daughters I have for Oluwaseyi were living with us until December.

"We had a quarrel and Oluwaseyi threatened to kill me. He sent me out.

"Family members, including his father, appealed to him to reconcile with me, but he refused. He also refused to allow me to see my daughters.

"When I heard about the rape, I confronted him on the matter. He boasted that nothing would happen to him. He broke bottles, and said he would kill me. Later on when I sat my first daughter down, she confessed to me that she was truly raped, and that it had occurred on several occasions.

"That was why I took the matter to the government, so that they would help me to check Oluwaseyi's excesses."

It was gathered that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, provided medical attention, through the Mirabel Centre, to the three girls, and ensured that the police got the suspect arrested.

A police source said

"The woman initially left with the teenager and the two girls she has for Oluwaseyi in December, 2014. The suspect, however, trailed her and forcefully took the girls, threatening to take her life if she refused.

"The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, in the family's Lekki apartment, while his daughters were also taken to the centre for tests. It was confirmed that they had been defiled. The two of them are in Primary 3 and Primary 1 respectively."

The girls are currently living with their mother.

 

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the incident.

 

She added that Oluwaseyi had been arrested.
