Buhari’s anti-corruption war, a step in right direction —Kumuyi

General Superintendent, GS, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, DCLM, Pastor Williams Kumuyi has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption as a step in the right direction which should be supported by all Nigerians.

In a chat with journalists, Kumuyi who was in Aba, Abia state  on Sunday  for a unique combined worship service of the church at the Abia State Polytechnic playground, said “I am a layman when it comes to politics. But from what we can see, I believe that the President is in the right direction and if we support him with our comments and in other ways, I believe that we will see corruption brought down very quickly.”

He stated that the Church can help the President in the fight against corruption by teaching members to shun evil conducts and contribute positively to the progress of the country.

“When we say the church, we are not just talking about buildings; we are talking of people who come to church and also go to offices. For the church to support the fight against corruption, preachers must teach our people to learn how to contribute positively to the progress of the country wherever they are .

If you are a governor, commissioner, teacher, minister and among others; do your best for the country. Don’t think of what you can get out of the place that you are working, but how they can contribute to the place in order to support the efforts of the government.”

The cleric advised political office holders to lead with the fear of God and always remember to fulfill their campaign promises, insisting that they must see themselves as servants of the people who elected them into office.

Earlier in his sermon which centred on ‘The Riches of Christ’s Supernatural Love”, Kumuyi described God’s love for man as inexhaustible and beyond the imagination and understanding of man, adding that it was because of God’s love for man that made Him to send His only begotten son to die to redeem and reconcile man back to God.

According to him, “God is on a rescue mission and is ready to reach out to the deepest part of the earth to rescue anyone who wants to turn a new leaf. The reason why I’m in Abia state is that Abia is Gods Own State; I will like to plant in a place where the seed will germinate.”

Highlights of the cleric’s visit at the program titled; “Open for Extra-Ordinary Blessings”, was a special prayer session for the sick, church, Abia State and the entire country.

News News : Lesbianism scandal rocks Kogi varsity

Once again, Kogi State University is in the news for unpleasant reasons as lesbian sex videos involving students of the university recently emerged on the campus.

Some of the students involved are those of Economics and English Education departments.

The two students in one of the videos monitored by Vanguard, revealed how deep the culture of lesbianism had infiltrated the female hostels in the school.

One of the students is considering leaving the school to avoid possible stigmatization as the videos had gone viral.

A female student in the Department of Zoology who craved anonymity, told Vanguard that lesbianism was becoming a big issue in the university.

She said young, fresh undergraduates were lured into the immoral club as many of them do not know what was in it before joining the lesbian ring.

“Kogi State University is fast becoming the comfort zone for lesbians. Many Jambites are lured into the ring because they don’t even know what it is all about.

‘’What they do now is to relocate off-campus in order to enjoy the privacy needed for their illicit and immoral act. Once in it, it is so difficult to renounce because lesbians share a lot of gifts to keep victims in it.

‘’The authorities of this school may need to take drastic steps to restore the moral integrity and discipline for which we were known,” she said.

When Vanguard got in contact with one of the lesbians, she said she was lured into lesbianism in her first week on campus by a very wealthy 300 student.

She said she was not aware that their sex escapades were recorded, threatening to quit the university in order to save the integrity of her family.

“My attention was drawn to the video in circulation by one of my friends. When I watched it, I knew that was the end of my stay in this school.

‘’Many of my course mates already have the video, so it will be difficult for me to continue my academic programme because of possible stigmatization. I have brought shame to myself and my family,” she lamented.

Although the school authorities are yet to release an official statement on the scandal, sources close to the authorities said investigations into the issue of lesbianism among the students had commenced.

Modern slavery?. If you’re one of the doubters, then listen to Poonam Thapa, a teenage girl I met here in Nepal, where she is putting her life back together after being sold to a brothel'

Poonam Thapa was poor and uneducated when a woman offered an escape in the form of a well-paying job.

     "You can have a better life," Poonam remembers the woman saying. "And if you make good money, you will be respected by your father. You can help your family."

So Poonam, then age 12, ran off with the woman. When Poonam was eventually deposited in a brothel in Mumbai, India, she was puzzled. 

     "I didn’t even know what a brothel was," she recalls.

The brothel owner, a woman, dolled her up in a skimpy dress, equipped her with falsies, and gave her heels. Then the owner sold Poonam’s virginity to an older man.

     "The man raped me," Poonam says. "I didn’t know what he was doing. But I was bleeding and hurting and crying."

 

The brothel owner sternly told Poonam to buck up — she had paid $1,700 for Poonam and needed to recover her investment. So Poonam was locked inside the brothel, forced to have sex with 20 to 25 men a day, and more on Sundays and holidays. There were no days off, no trips outside the brothel, and, of course, no pay.

 

One day Poonam was hurting and refused a customer. She says the brothel-owner beat her and burned her with cigarettes; she showed me the scars.

 

Poonam thus became one of 20.9 million people worldwide — a quarter of them children — subjected to forced labor, according to the U.N.’sInternational Labour Organization. In the United States, tens of thousands of children are trafficked into the sex trade each year.

 

Men visiting Poonam’s brothel paid $2.50 for sex and were sometimes oblivious to the brutality, flattering themselves that the girls liked their work. They see girls who often smile; no one is holding a gun to their heads.

 

Poonam responded with what so many others have said: The smiles are on the outside, even as girls are crying inside.

 

     "We were told to smile, because a smile is money and will pull in customers," Poonam said. The girls were also ordered to say that they were over 18 and working voluntarily.

 

Then one day police raided the brothel. Warned by the brothel owner that the police would torture her if they found she was a child or trafficked, Poonam claimed that she was 23 and working voluntarily, but the police could see that she was a child and took her to a shelter.

 

Indian authorities returned Poonam to the care of Maiti Nepal, a leading anti-trafficking organization. Now Poonam is studying to be a social worker in hopes of helping other trafficked girls. A new study suggests that post-traumatic stress disorder is frequent among those who have been trafficked.

 

Anuradha Koilara, founder of Maiti Nepal, notes that there has been a bit of progress against sex trafficking of Nepali girls. A crucial step, whether in Nepal or the United States, is ending the impunity for pimps and traffickers, and Koirala says that Maiti Nepal has helped prosecute 800 people for involvement in trafficking. In America as well, we need to prosecute traffickers rather than their victims.

Genevieve Nnaji says ' I will marry when he finds me'

Actress Genevieve Nnaji says she will get married whenever her man finds her. Genevieve said this in a recent interview with Encomium magazine. When asked when she will be getting married, Genevieve said "When he finds me". Asked if he hasn't found her yet, she said "Exactly".

Genevieve says she has been absent from the movie scene because she couldn't find any script that was worth her time..

"I didn't take a break. Yes you haven't seen me in any film but it is not my doing. I read at least three or four scripts a week for the past five years. That is to show you how bad it is. I am very careful when it comes to what I take part in.
There is so much or nothing you can do to convince me. I have to love a story so that I can bring it to life. It is not a one man band. The story needs to entice. The character needs to be appealing and then, you are one with it. With that, it becomes easy to be a good actor. If I don't get a good script, I am not going on set. I haven't seen anything worth my while in years, that is the truth. I don't know who did what we did in the 90s. If you can't beat your last job, what is the point? You might as well take a bow but I am not bowing out yet" she said

News News : Supreme court throws out suit filed by Wike against Rivers election tribunal

The Supreme court has thrown out a suit filed by Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike against the Rivers state election tribunal. Wike had approached the apex court, asking that the action of the tribunal to relocate from Rivers state to Abuja be regarded as unconstitutional. The tribunal had relocated to Abuja due to security threats in Port Harcourt.

Delivering its judgement this morning, the 7 man panel of judges said the relocation of the tribunal from Rivers state to Abuja was constitutional and borne out of security challenges.

The apex court also added that the president of the appeal court did not err in law by ordering the relocation of the tribunal. On Saturday October 24th, the state tribunal nullified Wike's election and ordered a fresh election be conducted in 90 days.

Shocking footage of a police officer brutally assaulting a high school student

The video, shared by Shaun King on twitter and thought to have been filmed by a fellow student of Spring Valley High School, in Columbia, South Carolina, shows a Police Officer named as Deputy Ben Fields asking a girl to rise from a classroom desk. The girl refused and the officer wraps a forearm around her neck. The officer then tips the attached chair and desk backward until she slams to the floor.

 

He then throws the girl several feet across the floor to the front of the classroom where he ordered her hands behind her back and applied handcuffs throwing a student across a classroom floor.

 

School officials and sheriff’s deputies said they are investigating the incident.

 

     "Pending the outcome of the investigation, the district has directed that the school resource officer not return to any school in the district," Richland Two Superintendent Debbie Hamm said.

 

Deputy Fields will be placed on administrative duties as authorities investigate his handling of the female student, Richland County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Curtis Wilson confirmed.

An Islamic cleric, Ali Mohammed, has confessed to killing a 32-year-old graduate of Business Administration, Olufunbi Lawal.

The suspect, who owed Olufunbi N32,000, said he killed the deceased in order to avoid paying the debt.

Mohammed said he arranged four other relatives, who killed him on Thursday on Olorunfemi Street, in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

He said, “He (Olufunbi) sold a motorcycle to me for N40, 000 last month and I gave him N8, 000 with a promise to pay up before the end of October. But he kept disturbing me to give him his balance. I delayed in paying because the motorcycle developed some faults that also gulped the money I was to use to pay him.

“On that fateful day, I invited some of my relatives. We killed him in order to stop him from disturbing me.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that Olufunbi, a graduate of a Lagos polytechnic, left his shop to meet Mohammed to collect the money the latter was owing him for a motorcycle he (Olufunbi) sold to him.

As the 32-year-old entered his friend’s house on Thursday night, he was grabbed by a gang of five men led by Mohammed.

The men reportedly tied a rope around his neck before slamming an iron bar on his head, thereby breaking his skull.

Not done, the men chopped off his fingers and slashed his neck with a cutlass.

PUNCH Metro learnt that his corpse was dragged down from the three-storey building and thrown onto the roadside, where it was found on Friday morning.

A resident and close friend of the victim, Funke Nuberu, explained that Olufunbi and Mohammed had been friends for more than four years.

She explained that when Olufunbi’s landlady started demanding rent, he decided to turn to his friend to offset his debt, but the suspect asked for more time.

She said, “Olufunbi had a shop where he sold provisions. Ali (Mohammed) is a security guard on the street; he was employed to guard a renovated building that had been put up for sale by an insurance company.

“Olufunbi’s shop is adjacent to Ali’s house on Olorunfemi Street.

“Olufunbi usually closed his shop around 10pm. But he got a call around 8pm on that fateful day and asked one of his friends to look after the shop and that he would soon return.

“Around 10pm, he was not back and the landlady wanted to lock the gate, so the person looking after the shop came to inform me that Olufunbi had not returned.”

Nuberu said efforts to reach him on his telephone were abortive as it was later discovered that his handset was left in the shop.

She said the call log on the telephone was checked and it turned out that Mohammed was the last person the victim called.

Mohammed, when challenged, denied knowing his friend’s whereabouts.

“We challenged him that he was the last person that Olufunbi spoke with on the phone but he said Olufunbi called his old telephone line,” Nuberu added.

It was learnt that the victim’s family members reported the case at the Oworonsoki Police Division.

Charles Shittu, who claimed to have watched over the victim’s shop on Thursday, said he was going to make a statement at the station when information filtered in that a corpse had been found on an adjoining street.

He said it was identified as the 32-year-old.

A resident, Solomon Paul, said the blood dripping from the corpse was traced to the second floor of the building where Mohammed worked as a security guard.

He said, “There was blood from the ground floor to the top floor, so his corpse must have been dragged down after he was killed. We saw the clothes Mohammed wore the previous day, stained with blood. There was also a rope, which was used to tie his neck. The keys to his shop were on the ground.

“We found a crowbar which they used to hit his head and a cutlass that they also used to kill him.”

Paul said some old blood stains were also in the house, suggesting that criminal activities had been going on for some time in the house.

Mohammed was said to be a reputed muezzin in a mosque in the community.

PUNCH Metro learnt that an irate mob that tore through the building descended heavily on Mohammed until he passed out.

The President of the Oworonshoki Youth Forum, Oluwasegun Somorin, who decried the murder, urged security operatives to bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.

The victim’s elder brother, Kazeem, said the family did not have the means to pursue the case, adding that only God could fight for them.

He said, “Olufunbi was very hardworking. He already had a piece of land in Ikorodu, but he put the project on hold because of his education. He also had a fiancée and they were planning their wedding.

“It is only God that can fight for us. His corpse has already been deposited in a mortuary.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the incident, adding that two suspects had been arrested.

Horrific Accident Happens at Obosi-Nkpor Road Anambra; So many confirmed dead (photos)

The accident was said to have happened around 2am today tuesday. Three vehicles were involved.
All the occupants of the bus was said to have died except for a baby. The bus and the small car in the gutter were from crossriver states and they came to onitsha to buy stuffs; they were returning to Cross River state. According to eye witnesses, the big truck caused the accident.

It was said that the traders have started their journey back to Cross river states when they decided to follow that road (as they were told that robbers were robbing at upper iweka that night). My New Book Will Draw Blood – Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday vowed to
“draw blood” with his latest book, InterInventions, Between
Defective Memory and Public Lie, A Personal Odyssey in The
Republic of Liars.

The book was presented to the public at the June 12 Cultural
Centre Kuto, Abeokuta by the Edo State governor, Adams
Oshiohmole.

Soyinka had this to say about the book:

It is the nastiest book I have ever written. It is so
truthful that it hurts… it is my vengeance against
public lies. It is not one of the butterfly books.
No, it is not a butterfly book.
