Soyinka Reacts To Report That He Paid Tribute To Bola Tinubu

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has distanced himself from a tribute he purportedly wrote in honour of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

In a tribute which has gone viral on the social media, Soyinka was quoted as saying that he admired Tinubu because he saved Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.

Soyinka was also alleged to have said that he would continue to stand by Tinubu no matter what.

The alleged tribute read in part, “I do not admire Tinubu because he is a saint. I do not admire Tinubu because he is from the South. 

I do not admire Tinubu because he is a Yoruba. If I want saints, I will proceed to heaven, not on earth. Every human is fallible. I admire Tinubu because he saved Nigeria from the danger of falling into a one-party state.

“He has nurtured many renowned national successors. He listened to the voice of the masses to surrender his personal ambition at the most critical moment. He strategically terminated the PDP’s 60-year ambition in 16 years.

“Anybody, any cabal, any Viju milk activist, attempting to humiliate Asiwaju must have me to contend with. 

An average the PDP man is angry with Asiwaju because he brought them to their knees. If anyone thinks that bringing down Asiwaju is his project, that mission will not only crash but it will boomerang.

“He owns Lagos! I hear you! Ask your grandfather and parents how they acquired your so-called family land. Is it God that allocated it to them? Prof. Wole Soyinka.”

However, Soyinka, while reacting in a statement he signed on Thursday, wondered why people continued to use his name to spread falsehood.
He asked members of the public to be careful about the things they read on the Internet.

He said, “It is difficult to prescribe for the sort of mind that finds itself so inadequate that it must foist its opinions on others, and with such confident sense of impunity. 

Kindly assist me in letting the public know that I am not in any way connected with the publication.

“I can only yet again recommend my recent ‘occasional’ publication, ‘The Republic of Liars,’ to the public as a cautionary tract, while the growing population of victims await the routine descent of the full operational wrath of Internet policing on all impudent impersonators.”

(photos) Gay Activist Bisi Alimi Visits Nigeria

Bisi Alimi, a popular Nigerian gay activist, was in  the country last week for the 2015 edition of Ake Arts and Book Festival.

The yearly literary feast held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto-Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital. Bisi got to deliver an epic lecture, paid homage to ifa and he received divination. Ifa had good news and words of caution for Bisi. He also got to visit Lagos and met Prof Niyi Osundare.

But the highlight , Bisi said was the fact that he was able to see his mum again. The last time he had seen her was over 8 years ago after hateful Nigerians made him flee the country. Bisi was happy he came home and was able to take her back to London but also has this to say about his journey:

Coming back to Nigeria has been a blessing. It might never be home anymore but it is still where the heart beats.

Cult War: Man shot dead in hotel

There was a gun battle on Thursday night between yet to be identified rival cult groups and at the end one person was shot dead in a popular hotel in Lagos State, western Nigeria.

The incident which happened at about 10 pm at a popular hotel located in Akesan area also left several other people injured.

The police from Igando division have recovered the corpse of the unidentified victim and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy report.

P.M.NEWS gathered that a group of young people suspected to be cult members were in the hotel for a meeting when members of a rival cult group invaded the place and shot randomly.

Both the hotel workers and the group that was having meeting there scampered for safety and in the process sustained injuries while one person lost his life.

When our reporter visited Igando Police Station on Friday morning, the DPO was not around to comment on the incident.

However, sources at the station confirmed the incident and said the police have commenced investigation.

At the hotel, one of the workers who refused to identify himself, confirmed the incident and directed our reporter to Igando police station for further information.

When pressed further to ascertain wether it was a robbery attack, he denied it and said the people that came did not steal any thing from the hotel.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, could not be reached as the time of filing this report because his phone was switched off.

Buhari's policies annoying and sending away investors- Bloomberg

International Business magazine, Bloomberg today published an article title "Buhari Bounce Becomes Bust as Nigeria Policies Irk Investors". The article states that President Buhari's policies since assuming office has continued to chase investors away and has dashed the hopes of many who believed in him when he assumed office. "When Muhammadu Buhari clinched victory in Nigeria’s presidential elections in March, stocks soared as investors looked to the former military ruler to reverse decades of economic mismanagement and policy inertia.
Now hopes have fizzled in his ability to turn around Africa’s largest economy and oil producer.

Money that flowed into stocks and bonds in the West African nation, which McKinsey & Co. says could become one of the world’s 20 biggest economies by 2030, is now fleeing as growth prospects diminish along with oil prices. While Buhari, 72, has prioritized stamping out the graft that has plagued Nigeria since independence from Britain in 1960, policy-making appears as uncertain and haphazard as ever.

“After the initial euphoria, people have become disillusioned,” Ayodele Salami, who oversees about $500 million of African equities as chief investment officer of London-based Duet Asset Management Ltd., said by phone. “He would probably say that he’s being deliberative and cautious. But we expected more.”

Duet’s Africa fund has cut its investments in the country to about 24 percent of the total from 38 percent in the last year. Buhari waited five months before naming his cabinet, hasn’t proposed a clear plan to revive growth and backed foreign-exchange controls aimed at defending the naira.

His retention of gasoline subsidies, plans to raise spending in the face of declining revenue and silence about a $5.2 billion fine levied on mobile-phone operator MTN Group Ltd. have added to investor unease. Nigeria’s benchmark stock index has plunged 22 percent since reaching a year-high on April 2, the day after Buhari was declared the winner of the presidential race against incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.

That’s the third-worst performance globally in the period, after the bourses in Ukraine and Egypt. The index advanced 12.5 percent in the two days after Jonathan conceded. To be sure, Buhari inherited depleted government coffers and a bureaucracy that multiple probes have blamed for looting billions of dollars of oil revenue. The president has said he delayed appointing ministers because he needed time to vet suitable candidates. Garba Shehu, a spokesman for Buhari, didn’t immediately respond to written questions after requesting they be sent that way. The hiatus has compounded the pain caused by the slide in the price of crude, which accounts for two-thirds of government revenue and 90 percent of export earnings. Growth, which averaged 6.3 percent annually over the past decade, is set to slow to a 16-year low of 3.3 percent this year, according to the median estimate of 15 economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

Many filling stations ran dry this month as the government withheld fuel subsidies to suppliers, preventing them from restocking. Lengthening lines forced Buhari to ask lawmakers for permission to pay 413 billion naira ($2 billion) in overdue payments, an amount that hadn’t been budgeted for. While next year’s budget has yet to be finalized, Buhari wants to raise spending by 56 percent, according to a person who attended a briefing on the government’s plans and asked not to be identified because the matter is private. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the government plans to spend its way out of a slowing economy and that an infrastructure fund will be created with public and private financing.

The penalty imposed on MTN’s Nigeria unit last month for failing to register about 5 million subscribers may be an attempt to plug the hole in government finances, according to Cobus de Hart, an economist at NKC Independent Economists. “You cannot deny there might be a fiscal element to the massive fine,” he said by phone from Paarl, near Cape Town. “It will make investors a little bit more wary of investing in Nigeria.

” An even bigger concern for many investors is the authorities’ naira policy. The Central Bank of Nigeria, with Buhari’s backing, has burned through $4.3 billion of reserves this year and choked off supply of foreign exchange to banks and their customers to defend the naira, even as major oil exporters such as Russia and Colombia have let their currencies slide. The restrictions prompted JPMorgan Chase & Co. to remove Nigeria from its local-currency emerging-market bond indexes, tracked by more than $200 billion of funds, in September, triggering a selloff in the nations’ assets.

While the naira has been all but fixed at about 198 to 199 per dollar since March, forward prices suggest it will drop by almost one-fifth, to 243.5, in a year. The number-one issue is the exchange rate,” Andrew Howell, a Citigroup Inc. frontier markets strategist, said from Lagos. ”Access to foreign exchange is becoming a widespread problem.” Nigerian Breweries Plc, the nation’s biggest brewer that’s controlled by Heineken NV, said it takes two weeks to obtain dollars to pay for its imports, twice as long as it required a few months ago. Nestle SA’s Nigerian unit has had to wait six weeks for dollars, according to Renaissance Capital Ltd. analysts. Buhari has won plaudits from leaders including President Barack Obama for his effortsto tackle graft. He replaced the management of the state oil company, which was accused of withholding billions of dollars from the government, and has stepped up the fight against an insurgency being waged by Islamist group Boko Haram.

“The degree of transparency we’re starting to get with the new administration is hugely positive,” Douglas Rowlings, an analyst at Moody’s Investors Service, said in an interview in Lagos. “It gives investors the perception that operating in Nigeria will now be done following proper procedures.” Jan Dehn, head of research at Ashmore Group Plc, which oversees almost $60 billion of emerging market assets, remains unconvinced that Buhari is up to the job.

The fund manager sold all its Nigerian government debt in the past year. “So far the Buhari administration has done all the wrong things,” Dehn said by phone from London. “Not only has he been incredibly slow in taking any action, when he finally has taken action on the economic front it’s been diametrically opposed to sensible policy. That is a major disappointment given expectations prior to his election.”

News News :“DSS PLANNING TO KILL NNAMDI KANU IN DETENTION, HE IS BEING STARVED” – SISTER LAMENTS

Princess Chinwe Kanu, the younger sister of detained Director of Radio Biafra and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised the alarm over the health condition of her elder brother, saying that personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) want to kill him in detention.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun at her father’s compound in Afara Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, Princess Kanu said what she saw of her elder brother when she attended his trial in Abuja on Monday made her to conclude that the DSS wants to kill him while in their custody.

“Honestly, the way they are going about this case I’m not comfortable with it because when I saw my brother, he looked like a shadow of his former self. He looked pale and anaemic and he has physical pain as a result of torture, starvation and the hardship he is going through in the hands of the DSS operatives,” she alleged.

“After the court session, when he (Nnamdi) came out, as the IPOB members and the Biafrans were outside the gate while some were in the court premises hailing him and chanting: “Nnamdi, Nnamdi ka anyi ga-eso”, the way the DSS man roughhandled him, he almost fell down. I don’t know what his reasons were, but I’m happy Nnamdi never challenged him.

She said the DSS should know that her brother was not a criminal, but only a prisoner of conscience. “They held him so tight that he screamed and I felt bad. Because his health is deteriorating by the day, I am calling on rights activists, the international crime code, the Amnesty International, the UN and the British commission to come and rescue their citizen in the hands of the DSS. They are so mean and wicked, they will kill him if care is not taken”, she pleaded.

Expressing joy that she saw her brother in high spirits inside the courtroom which she said the family was not allowed to enter if not for the intervention of their lawyer, Princess Kanu said she has confidence that God will set the director of Radio Biafra free in the next adjourned date.

“I have confidence in what Eze Chukwuokike Abiama (God) will do because He is not a man that He will lie neither is He a man that He can disappoint us or deceive us and because His word is yea and Amen and because He is the one that brought His son out, He will not abandon or leave him that’s what I believe in,” Kanu said.

She said it was a shame the DSS that was supposed to serve and protect the citizen, on the contrary, it is torturing and starving them to death. “My brother was assaulted publicly in the court premises and I’m standing here with an evidence to show the world what is going on the injustice and nepotism that is going on in Nigeria. I’m afraid of my live and that of my family with the way things are going”.

Princess Kanu said it was wrong for the Federal Government to have charged his brother with terrorism, noting that this was the height of tyranny. “Will someone help tell President Muhammadu Buhari that this is a democratic dispensation, not autocratic government where he was the General?

She said charging Nnamdi with terrorism means equating him with Boko Haram members, saying it was the height of injustice and a way to continue in humiliating and assaulting an unarmed civilian which she said was not the right thing to do.

3, 500 male sex workers, mostly married, discovered in Abuja - NACA

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) Professor John Idoko today disclosed that it recently discovered about 3,500 male sex workers within the Abuja city centre, most of whom were married men. Idoko made the disclosure while speaking at the agency's maiden lecture in Abuja. He said a study carried out by the agency indicated that over 60 per cent of the male sex workers are married raising the concern of spouse HIV transmission. He added that the findings by the agency also indicated that a high proportion of married women in Cross River and Benue had other sexual partners within the last six months.

Church Member confession : says" how pastor Chris paid me to fake a Miracle "

Popular Nigerian pastor and head of Believers World, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has yet again been involved in another controversy. This time, the pastor has been accused by a member of his own church of staging miracle-healing sessions.

According to a report by South Africa’s Sowetan, followers have said that he has been hiring people to pretend to be sick and disabled and then “be healed” during his television shows and public prayer meetings.

“I was offered R10 000 to rehearse and pretend to be in a wheelchair three weeks before the all-night prayer called Night of Bliss at the Johannesburg Stadium,” the newspaper quoted a member of the church.

“The pastor told me that they were looking for people to work for the church. He said that I was going to sit in a wheelchair and be wheeled around while pretending to be physically ill. I would then stand up and walk as soon as Pastor Chris stopped praying for me. “Even children who are healthy are whisked around in wheelchairs. Some use crutches.

Everyone is allocated a person who tells the congregation about your background, your specific illness and suffering. 

“The pastor then raises his hands and places them maybe on your legs if you cannot walk, and a few seconds later you get up and walk around the room,” the source said. He claimed he called the church the day after their offer and turned them down. 

“I just told myself that using the word of God to lie to desperate people is immoral, so I refused to take up their offer.” Also speaking about the pay-for-miracle, another worshiper of the church, said: “When he started healing people, I did not see him call anyone from the audience.

The people that he ‘healed’ came from a certain section of the audience and it looked like he came with them especially for the event. “I saw a lot of people in wheelchairs leaving the venue who had not been healed.

LAGOS State Government  raised the alarm over the danger of buying and consuming exhumed contaminated poultry produce like chicken and turkey meat presently in circulation in the state.

The state’s Commission­er for Agriculture, Mr. To­yin Suarau, who disclosed this while receiving officials of the National Orien­tation Agency (NOA), who came on the directive of the Federal Government to ap­peal for support on how to sensitize Lagosians on the danger posed by this act noted that these exhumed poultry produce are poisonous and could lead to death if consumed.

 Suarau added that the imported contaminated poultry produce were seized by men of the Ni­geria Customs Service in Badagry but were later exhumed after being destroyed by some unscrupulous individuals who now sell same to unsuspecting consumers.

“This visit by officials of National Orientation Agency was based on the circular received by the agency about the recently exhumed contaminated poultry produce being de­stroyed by officials of the Nigeria Customs Service somewhere in Badagry.

“The need for sensitization on the dangers as­sociated with consuming these exhumed poisonous poultry produce cannot be overemphasized especially in view of the havoc it pos­es to the public,” he noted.

 The commissioner pos­ited that the imported poultry produce were preserved with chemicals like formalin which is poisonous, adding that it could lead to slow death without the knowledge of the con­sumer.

Herbalist kidnapped and Turns Minors to Sex Slaves (Photos)

Two stolen kids that were rescued by the Cross River State Police Command on Thursday said they were made sex slaves by a herbalist, Emmanuel Akpan-Okon, who held them hostage for four years. 

The kids, Esther Wisdom and Felicia Destiny, both aged 11, said in the four years that they were held hostage, the herbalist raped them almost every day.

Akpan-Okon (42) was arrested by the police following a tip-off that he specialised in the preparation of charms for armed robbers.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Henry Fadairo, said the rescued kids were abducted from their
parents separately from Onitsha, Anambra State, and Auchi, Edo State.

He said:

“On November 16, 2015, we raided one Emmanuel Akpan’s home in Akamkpa, in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, based on a tip-off. We gathered he was into the preparation of charms for armed robbers and treatment of criminals with bullet wounds.

During the raid, we saw two little girls in his house. One is Esther Wisdom and the other, Felicia Destiny. They are both 11 years. On enquiry, we found out that they were abducted four years ago. Wisdom was stolen from Onitsha while Destiny was stolen from Auchi.

We are making efforts to see how we can locate their parents. The victims claimed that he had been having regular sex with them.”

Destiny said she was in primary four when she was abducted, adding that the herbalist had raped her many times .

 She said:
“I was in primary four when he took me away from my home. I remember that my mother lost her sister and when she was going for the burial, she told the man, who was a commercial motorcycle rider, to bring me to her village. That was how I found myself living with him. I used to tell him that I did not like sex, but he continued.”

Also, Wisdom said:
“He has been having sex with us regularly. He gives us food to eat and promises that one day he will take us back to our mothers.”
Akpan-Okon, who is from Akwa Ibom State, said he abducted the girls because their mothers could not cater for them. 

He said:
“While staying in the same compound with Wisdom’s mother at Onitsha, I observed that she had problems bringing up her nine children. This girl, Wisdom, was always with me when I was staying in their compound. So, when I wanted to leave Onitsha, I took her with me without telling her mother.

When I left Onitsha with her, I went to Auchi, and was riding a commercial motorcycle as a means of livelihood. Where I stayed in Auchi, Destiny was always coming to play with Esther. I also noticed that Destiny’s mother had many children. So, when I wanted to leave the town, I took her along.
I had sex with them and I know it is bad in the sight of God. I have a girl child who is with the mother. I will not be happy if she is treated this way.”

35 decomposing bodies found in Bama

35 decomposed bodies have been found and buried in Bama Local government area of Borno state four months after it was liberated from Boko Haram insurgents.‎ The Chairman of the local government area, Ali Gujja who disclosed this to journalists during a tour of the community yesterday November 26th, said the decomposed bodies were evacuated from many houses destroyed by Boko Haram during one of their many attacks on the community.

"We've evacuated more than 35 decomposed bodies in Bama in the course of our clearing exercise since the state government has given a matching order for us to clean the ruins of the town so that rehabilitation and reconstruction can start in earnest,'' he said
