Lagos State Court Orders La Casera Not To Sack Staff

We recalls that the La Casera Company had on 15 September, said it could no longer guarantee the safety of its workers, thereby, shutting down operations at its Mile 2 Plant on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.

The management of La Cesera Company Plc, makers of La Casera soft drink and other consumables, has been restrained by an apex National Industrial Court (NIC), Lagos Division, from terminating the employment of its workers over a certain dispute with the National Union of Food Beverage, Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE).

Also, the company’s spokesman, Mr Tola Bademosi, had issued a statement which explained that over 200 demonstrators led by representatives of the National Union of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) invaded the company’s premises on Saturday and Monday.
According to reports, no fewer than 1,500 workers comprising 700 regular workers and 800 casuals, had been allegedly sacked by the soft drink company.
In the same vein, the NIC which gave the order on September 15, ordered the company, either acting by itself or its agents, not to temper with the employment of the staff, pending the hearing of the substantive suit on October 19, 2015.
The court statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos, reads in part:
“With this ruling, the action of the management, which through unsigned notice pasted on the gate of the company at the Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, a day earlier, (September 14), terminating the employment of its staff, has been nullified.”
However, Justice Obaseki-Osaghae, ruling on an ex-parte application dated September 11, 2015, on suit number NICN/LA/416/2015, brought by NUFBTE against La Casera Company Plc, after hearing Mr. Sola Iji, counsel to claimant/applicant (NUFBTE), said:
“It is hereby ordered that an order of interim injunction restraining the respondent/claimant whether by itself, its management, staff, directors, members, agents, proxies or privies from determining or otherwise terminating by any means, pending motion on notice filed by the respondent/claimant, will be heard along with the applicant/defendant’s motion on notice.”
The court ordered all parties to maintain the peace and take no action that will lead to a breakdown of law and order.
The court, however, adjourned the case to 19 October for hearing of the two pending motions.

According to report, the master of the house had been sleeping with the maid whose name was not given, and when she became pregnant and informed him, he blatantly denied responsibility and to take vengeance on him, she gruesomely cut off the hand of his new born baby.

Kuwait court upholds death penalty for African maid who killed 19yr old daughter of her employee

Kuwait's Cassation Court on Thursday, September 17 upheld a death sentence for an Ethiopian maid for killing a Kuwaiti teenager. 22-year-old Rabiya Mahmoud was sentenced to death in November. The court sentenced her to death by hanging after she admitted to the public prosecution that she killed Siham Humood Flaitah Al Shemmari, 19, while the family members were resting after hosting a dinner reception celebrate the graduation of a relative.

According to reports on the case, Rabiya confessed that in March 2014 she took a knife and walked into the victim's bedroom where she stabbed her in the chest. The victim survived the first stabs and pleaded for her life; however, Rabiya refused and stabbed her again until she died.

She then fled the house, but later headed to the Sulaibikhat police station and turned herself in at 5:45 am. She told officers that she stabbed the victim who was asleep, then locked her inside the room before leaving her employer's house. She cited conflicts with the victim as the reason, and said that she had planned the murder days earlier and that her plans had been delayed because of the presence of the victim's younger sister.

The police said that officers responded to an emergency call reporting that a door was locked in a Sulaibikhat house with a girl inside. Firefighters broke the door open and found the girl bleeding profusely. She was rushed to the hospital but doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. The medical report said the death was caused by four stab wounds -- two in the chest and two in the abdominal area.

Investigators confirmed that Rabiya killed the young girl after they found her fingerprints on the knife used in the crime.

Siham was a freshman at Kuwait University's Faculty of Arts when she was killed. Her father, Humood, was a member of Kuwait's national team that participated in the 1982 Fifa World. Cup.

Cheating wife dumps newborn baby on doorstep after keeping pregnancy secret from her husband

Leigh-Anne Varley, 36, said she believed the baby was the result of an affair and feared breaking up the family unit.

eating wife dumped her newborn baby on a doorstep after keeping her entire pregnancy secret from her husband.
Leigh-Anne Varley, 36, told unsuspecting hubby Simon, 39, and their two children - aged 16 and six - she had ovarian cysts which caused 'swelling'.
In reality, she was pregnant by a lover and hid his baby boy, named 'Jack', right up to the birth, a court heard on Thursday.
For nine months, she meticulously planned a home delivery, got scissors and towels ready, and worked out where to abandon the baby near her home in Horden, County Durham.
s she went into labour, she did some housework, put her six-year-old to bed then delivered in the bathroom, with her teenage daughter on a night out with friends, and Simon working night-shift.
Sneaking out of the neat modern terrace at the dead of night, she returned within minutes, later booking a 'dream' trip to Disney World in Florida for her family, then going to work.
Varley cut the umbilical cord with kitchen scissors, wrapping the placenta in a carrier bag, and dumping it in a wheelie bin, Peterlee magistrates heard.

Crime scene: The new born was left on a neighbour's doorstep

Wrapping the tiny newborn in a dressing gown, she placed him on the doorstep of a flat close to a medical centre, with a note saying: "Please take care of my baby boy.
"Please don't go public as my husband is violent and will kill me."
She also knocked on a door in a bid to alert a nearby neighbour.
The child was found cold, but otherwise unharmed between four and five hours later by a man walking his dog.
The mum-of-three admitted abandoning a child contrary to the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.
The court heard Leigh-Anne was still "part of the family unit."
Sarah Traynor, prosecuting, said: "Just before 4.45am on May 26th a member of the public walking his dog found a baby boy wrapped in a dressing gown in the doorway of a block of flats.
"There was a note with the baby which said 'Please take care of my baby boy, please don't go public as my husband is violent and will kill me.

Family photo: Leigh Ann Varley and her husband Simon Varley
Mrs Traynor added: "She admitted the offence and gave a full explanation of the background to the officers.
"She said she had an affair and she believed the baby was the result of that affair.
"She was unable to tell her husband because she was fearful of breaking up the family unit.
"This is a very sad case, she is of previous good character and was in a desperate situation which led to the offence occurring."
Sheila Ramshaw, mitigating, said: "This poor lady has suffered a lot over several months, she is of impeccable character, she is someone we will
never see before the courts again.
Magistrates imposed a 14-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered Varley pay £325 costs.

Nigerian woman who laundered stolen student cash ordered to pay back almost £630k

Ruth Smith-Ajala, who helped defraud hundreds of UK students online has been ordered to pay back almost £630,000 after admitting she made £1.2million from her crimes. On Monday, September 14, the Old Bailey heard how the 46-year-old Nigerian National was jailed in December 2013 for her part in conning students out of more than £1.5m.

Students were sent emails inviting them to update details on their student loan account via a link to a bogus website. When the site was accessed by the unsuspecting victims, a cyber crime gang gained unauthorised access to their bank accounts, stealing large amounts of money.

Smith-Ajala used her share of the cash to buy products in the UK, which she then shipped out for sale at a wholesaler in Lagos, Nigeria, that she owns. During her trial, Smith-Ajala tried to convince the court that she was running a legitimate business but she was ultimately found guilty of conspiracy to launder money and mortgage fraud.

The mortgage fraud related to seven houses that Smith-Ajala was renting out in Gravesend, Northfleet and Chatam, in Kent; Grays, in Essex; and Catford, in London.

In conjunction with the investigation, specialist detectives from the Met's Central Criminal Finance Team (CFT) launched a financial investigation. They and the Crown Prosecution Service obtained a restraint order for the properties and Smith-Ajala's banks accounts were frozen, prohibiting her from selling the houses and hiding the money.

As a result of the confiscation proceedings, Smith-Ajala will now have to sell the houses, using the profits and rent money to pay the confiscation sum. Detective Inspector Pete Ward, of the Met's Central Criminal Finance Team, said:
"We won't stop at seeing criminals convicted for their crimes - we will also make them pay back the money they have taken from their victims."
"It is ironic that Smith-Ajala helped defraud hundreds of students while paying for one of her own children to be privately educated."

"She has just three months to pay back the money she obtained, or face a further five years in prison. If she doesn't pay the money by the time she is out of prison, the order will remain and her finances will be scrutinized to ensure she continues to pay up." He added.

Akabueze says ' If Fashola wanted to steal, it wouldn't be N78m'

Former Lagos state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget under Babatunde Fashola's government, Ben Akabueze has come out to defend his former boss in the N78 million website scandal which broke weeks ago. In an interview with Kadaira Ahmed of Straight Talk With Kaidaia, Ben Akabueze says they ran a very detailed government that checked against fraud and that if the former governor wanted to steal, it wouldn't be N78 million

"I think it would be useful for people to look at the full scope of the project and then make a determination about whether or not it did not represent value for money. For me, we ran an annual budget of over N400bn. I think that if he (Fashola) really wanted to steal money, it wouldn't be N78m out of over N400bn that he had access to. Of course, every kobo of public funds must be accounted for and I hope in the future, we can get the full facts and it will be made available to the public. I don't know of anybody succeeding at anything like that (stealing) because we had a system that we designed as much as possible to prevent such. Take for instance, in our capital expenditure, we had in-house experts, so, if it was a construction project, regardless of the agency of government undertaking the project, the experts in the ministry of works and infrastructure would do an independent assessment of the cost. We had quantity surveyors, engineers, architects that offered advice. If it was an IT related project, the team in the Ministry of Science and Technology would do an independent evaluation and so for you to steal; you would need to corrupt the whole process.""he said

Nigerian Woman Murders Husband So She Can Get His Insurance (Photos)

A Nigerian woman married to a Cleveland firefighter Lt. William Walker paid several people to murder her husband, according to a Cleveland Municipal Court charging document. She played the mourning widow at his funeral and called 911 after he was shot. Now, the wife of Cleveland Fire Lt. William Walker has been charged after investigators said she plotted his murder.
Police took Uloma Walker-Curry, 44, into custody Tuesday. She is charged with aggravated murder.
Walker, 45, was ambushed outside his East Side home on Nov. 3, 2013. He was shot several times in the chest before the gunman hired by his Nigerian wife left in a car.
Uloma Walker-Curry, who was home at the time, made a frantic 911 call seconds after her husband was shot.
Uloma Walker-Curry married the firefighter in July 2013.
Last month, prosecutors charged Chad Padgett with aggravated murder in connection with the case.
Padgett, 21, was dating Walker’s stepdaughter at the time of the slaying and sent several text messages seeking a gun in the days leading up to the homicide, Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Brian Murphy said during Padgett’s arraignment.
.
.
ULOMA AND HER ACCOMPLICES
Officials have not identified Padgett as the gunman. He is being held on $1 million bond.
Walker, 45, parked in his driveway and was walking toward his Lampson Road home when the attack occurred, police said.
Witnesses told police they heard shouting coming from outside the home at the time of the shooting, officials said.
Walker died at MetroHealth Medical Center. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, which performed an autopsy Monday, will determine the official cause of death.
The city promoted Walker from firefighter to lieutenant in August. Walker joined the Cleveland Division of Fire in 1998 and was certified as an emergency medical technician, officials said.
.
According to reports by AP, Cleveland homicide detectives initially followed leads provided by Walker-Curry that neighborhood drug dealers might have killed her husband to stop him from complaining about them. But a Crime Stoppers tip and cellphone technology, including text messages, led detectives to investigate Walker-Curry, who was arrested last week, prosecutors said.
Dorty was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year for an unrelated aggravated robbery. Padgett was arrested Aug. 8 for Walker’s slaying. Padgett dated Walker-Curry’s daughter, prosecutors said.
No attorney information was available for the four suspects. Walker-Curry and Padgett are being held on $1 million bonds. No bond has been set for Hein, who was arrested Monday. The juvenile will eventually face delinquency charges, prosecutors said.
One of Walker-Curry’s three children, a daughter who asked to only be referred to by her first name, spoke with FOX 8 about the arrest. Jessica said she actually moved out of state years ago because of her rocky relationship with her mother.
She called her mom hurtful and a pathological liar, but said she never imagined she could also be a cold-hearted killer.
“I cannot, I cannot even think how this is possible,” Jessica said. “But I wouldn’t put it past her. I’m so disgusted. I’m hurt… The way she performed at the funeral… I feel really really bad.”
Jessica didn’t know her sisters boyfriend, who is also charged in the case, but met him at the funeral and described him as unemotional and detached. She isn’t sure if she will contact her mother in jail, and said right now her thoughts and prayers are with the Walker family.
“Because one thing I know is that he loved his kids, he loved his family,” Jessica said. “He was really good guy.”
Those thoughts were echoed by the woman who lived next door to Walker. Frances Russell described him as a nice man, who worked two jobs to put his daughter through college.
“I want to know the reason, why would you just kill a person like that?” Russell said. She said she suspected it was an inside job and she’s praying for the family.
“We always thought it was personal,” she said. “It’s hard to explain that you can see a person and know they have that much evil in their heart.”

Breaking News: Court orders Saraki’s arrest

Asset declaration: Tribunal orders Saraki's arrest
•Saraki
According to the Nation, The Code of Conduct Tribunal on Friday issued a bench warrant against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
The tribunal ordered the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to arrest and produce him in court.
According to Vanguard,e Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja has ordered the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr. Solomon Arase and other relevant security agencies in ‎the country to arrest the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
In a ruling this afternoon, the tribunal headed by Justice Danladi Umar issued a bench warrant against Saraki following his refusal to appear in court to face a 13-count criminal charge that was preferred against him by the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Bukola Saraki
Bukola Saraki
FG had through a deputy director in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. M.S. Hassan, asked the tribunal to order Saraki’s arrest.
‎Saraki who was billed for arraignment this morning, sent his team of lawyers to serve the tribunal with a copy of the ruling of Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, which summoned the Ministry of Justice to appear on Monday to show cause why the trial should be allowed to proceed.
Equally summoned by the court were the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar and that of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Mr. Sam Saba, as well as Mr. Hassan who signed the charge against Saraki.
Meanwhile, irked by Saraki’s absence at the tribunal for the commencement of his prosecution over alleged false declaration of assets, the Ministry of Justice prayed the Justice Umar-led panel to order for his arrest, saying “he cannot sit in the comfort of his chamber and object to his trial in absentia”.
The prosecution further maintained that Justice Mohammed lacked the powers to summon ‎the CCT and CCB chairmen, even as it accused Saraki of engaging in “forum shopping” in a desperate bid to scuttle his trial.
Meanwhile, Saraki has through his lawyer, begged the tribunal to consider his position as the Senate President and stay the execution of the arrest warrant, saying he would be available for trial on Monday.
His plea was refused by Justice Umar who maintained that the accused person, having sworn to protect the constitution, ought to have shown respect to the tribunal by appearing before it today.

Japanese politicians come to blows over controversial security bill (photos)

A fight broke out in the Japanese parliament yesterday, September 17 as opposition lawmakers tried to stop a bill that could see the military fight abroad for the first time since World War II.
The brawl which came after hours of tortuous debate, failed to stop them from being approved as members of the ruling coalition stood up to signify their votes in favour. The bills are now expected to go to the full upper house on Friday, where they will likely be passed to become law. More pics after the cut..
