UN Offers To Boost Naira In Exchange For Legalization Of Abortion In Nigeria

A controversial and powerful United Nations population agency has offered to boost the Nigerian Naira in exchange for the federal government to change its position on reproductive health and abortion in the country.

Reports say there have been setbacks in advancing abortion and sexual rights for adolescents in Africa.

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) told Nigeria to take back its reservations on “sexual and reproductive health” and “reproductive rights” in a new UN development agreement. The controversial terms are the cornerstone of the decades-long campaign to create an international right to abortion, and expand sexual rights for minors.

“If Nigeria withdraws her reservation on the two targets, the country will get maximum value for Naira [the Nigerian currency],” the agency’s representative, Ms Ratidzai Ndhlovu, told a gathering of population experts in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s reservations are not new or controversial, but they undermine the goals of the UN population agency—backed by wealthy European governments and the United States—to reduce population growth in Africa.

Thief dies 'twice' in hospital after being stabbed in stomach by house owner

A thief 'died' twice in hospital after being stabbed in the stomach by the owner of a house he had robbed. The thief, 38 year old Craig Norman, spent nearly six months in Manchester Royal Infirmary and is now facing the threat of being jailed.

The courts heard how he used a spring-loaded punch to get into the home of 44 year old Lee Fellowes and his wife Kelly, 33.

Mr Fellowes went into the kitchen of their home after hearing the sound of smashing glass and when he looked towards the front door he saw a hand reaching for a bunch of keys in the lock, said prosecutor Subhanur Chowdhury. He kicked out at the hand but Norman managed to grab the keys and disappear.
"Bare-footed and in his pyjamas Mr Fellowes ran out of the back door. On the way he picked up a kitchen knife to protect himself and his young family," said Mr Chowdhury.
Outside he saw a vehicle driving away at speed and thought the intruder was driving.
So Mr Fellowes went back into the house and that was when he saw his wife struggling with a masked man dressed all in black and armed with a hammer.
Mr Chowdhury added: "Mr Fellowes ran at the man. Instinct took over and he pushed his hand holding the knife into his midriff. He pulled the knife out of the man's body and it fell to the ground."
Despite his serious injury, Norman managed to escape and on reaching home was covered in blood, it was said.
In court, Maggie McCormack, who is Mr. Norman's lawyer, said "Norman suffered a life endangering wound. And after being admitted to the MRI twice died. He does have a record but he takes issue with some of the evidence against him."
Norman, she said, pleaded guilty to burglary and the theft of keys valued at £50. He was bailed and due to appear at the Crown Court for sentence on October 6.

Glasgow preacher robbed in 'hate crime'

A Nigerian preacher has been robbed and racially abused by two men as he walked to his church in north Glasgow.
The 46-year-old was on his way to a church in Ashfield Street when he was attacked on Bardowie Street by two men.
He was hit with a glass bottle and punched before the men ran off with his rucksack at about 23:35 on Friday.
Police Scotland are treating the attack as a hate crime. The preacher sustained only minor injuries but was "very shaken", officers said.
The suspects were white and in their late teens. One is described as medium to heavy build, with a short dark crew cut hairstyle and wearing a grey hooded top, black tracksuit trousers and white trainers.
The second man has a slim build with short light brown hair, wearing a black hooded top and red tracksuit bottoms.
The preacher had just got off a bus on Saracen Street before the attack. The two men stole his rucksack which had a Bible and other possessions inside.
Det Con Alan Watt said: "On checking CCTV we can see the two suspects hanging about in Saracen Street a short time before the attack. I would appeal to anyone who recognises their description or who has information that will help officers with their enquiries to contact the Community Investigation Unit at Pollok via 101."
DC Watt said he was keen to hear from the driver of a grey Hackney taxi who was seen on CCTV just before the attack.

A couple arrested for using their children for child porn

A 47-year-old man and 34-year-old woman from Bedford, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been jailed for six-and-a-half years each after admitting creating indecent images and videos of their own children.

One of the children was made to use a sex toy while being filmed, Bedfordshire Police said.

Officers said the woman pleaded guilty to two charges of making indecent photographs of children, one count of distributing an indecent photograph of a child and one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The man pleaded guilty to two counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of possessing an indecent photograph of a child.
The victims were both under 16 at the time of the crimes.

Detective Constable Sarah Brookes, from the Bedfordshire Police Safeguarding Unit, led the case and said:
"This was a particularly stomach-churning series of crimes, in which two young girls were coerced by those in a position of trust into performing vile acts for the offenders' sexual gratification.
"Though they may be too young to realise the full extent of what has happened to them, these offences will no doubt stay with these innocent victims for life.
"For this reason I am pleased the courts have issued a custodial sentence and this repulsive pair will spend time behind bars."

Northern group to Saraki: resign now

Northern group to Saraki: resign now
According to The Nation,The Northern Ethnic Nationalities Unity Congress (NENUC) yesterday called for the resignation of the Senate President Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
The call came just as the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) secured a bench warrant for the arrest of the embattled Senate President by the CCB Tribunal over allegations of false declaration of assets dated back to 2003.
The group said the Senate President should resign before he drags the image and reputation of the office he presently occupies further in the mud.
Speaking with reporters yesterday, the National President and Convener of the group, Mr Bako Benjamin, said it is disgusting that the Senate President would rather be seeking court’s protection than going before the anti graft agency to clear his name of the charges.
“Let the Senate President come to equity with clean hands. Let him defend himself against all the charges levelled against him in the spirit of the new wind of change blowing across the country,” Benjamin said.
He said the anti-corruption war spearheaded by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration would be futile if people like the Senate President continue to seek protection from the law courts rather than presenting themselves for the acid test.
Benjamin, who noted that the recourse to the court itself is an admission of guilt, said: “Seeking protection from the law courts is sending a strong signal that he (Saraki) has something to hide.”
The group, he said, has therefore given the Senate President a three-day ultimatum to honourably resign to prevent impeachment proceedings against him for his eventual removal from the exalted office.
NENUC said Saraki’s continued stay in office is “capable of sending wrong signals to the international community and pose a huge question mark on President Buhari’s commitment to ridding the nation of corruption.
He said NENUC would not hesitate to mobilise other well-meaning Nigerians to march on the National Assembly in protest should the Senate President refuse to honourably resign from office within reasonable time.

Mum's hilarious letter to rebellious 13-year-old teenage son telling him to behave or start paying bills goes viral.

The single MUM, Who goes by

the name Estella Havisham,

said her son Aaron seemed to have "forgotten"

he was "only 13 and I'm the parent"

A mum's letter to her tearaway 13-year-old son warning him to start behaving or face paying the bills has gone viral.
The single mum, who goes by the name Estella Havisham, said her son Aaron seemed to have "forgotten" he was "only 13 and I'm the parent".
She tallies up the costs that he needs to cover, from $430 for rent, $116 for electricity, $21 for internet and $150 for food.
She also instructs Aaron to empty the rubbish, clean his bathroom, make his own meals and clean up around the house.
Offering him a compromise, she says if he would rather be her "child again, instead of roommate, we can renegotiate terms".
It has clearly struck a chord with parents after it gained more than 88,000 likes and 162,000 shares after it was posted on Facebook.

Warning: The letter

'Estella''s Twitter bio reads: "I am a 33-year-old single mom trying to raise a teenage son."
She says she uses a pseudonym because she is a survivor of domestic abuse.
The author - who reposted the letter on Twitter - admitted later, in a subsequent post, that she had only intended the post to be seen by family and friends when she put it on Facebook.
Speaking afterwards, the mum said she shamed her son to "make a point" and that she wasn't going to actually throw him out. "Nothing comes for free," she wrote.

Mother and boyfriend charged after murdered toddler's body 'kept in fridge then dumped in harbour'

The mother of a toddler found dead and wrapped in a rubbish bag has been charged following the girl's murder .
Two-year-old Bella Bond was kept in a fridge before the body was dumped in Boston Habour in the US, the New York Daily News Reports.

Bella’s mother, 40-year-old Rachelle Bond has been charged with being an accessory after the fact while her boyfriend Michael McCarthy, 35, has been charged with murder.

‘Baby Doe’ was identified as a Boston toddler, Bella Friday. Police have arrested her mother, Rachelle Bond

Tragic: Police have arrested Bella Bond's mother Rachelle following the horrific discovery.
“This child, whose very name means beauty, was murdered,” Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said. “We have a very good idea about what happened to her, based on the evidence.”Prosecutors are awaiting the results of DNA testing to confirm the child’s identity, though they said they “are extremely confident in this identification”.
“We allege that McCarthy caused Bella’s death, that he did so intentionally, that he and Bond took specific steps to keep Bella’s death a secret and to avoid prosecution,” Conley said.

Body: The two-year-old was found dead on a beach by a woman out walking her dog.
Bond told cops McCarthy thought the defenseless girl was 'possessed' and punched her several times in the stomach, which led to her death, sources told FOX25.
The source also said the pair kept the girl’s body in a fridge for a month before dumping it by the harbor.
Prosecutors declined to provide further details on the cause of death, only saying that the girl died “by an act of violence in the very place that she should have felt safest, in her home.”
Bella was found on June 25 across the water from Boston’s Logan Airport, by a woman walking a dog.

Arrests: Michael Patrick McCarthy, the boyfriend of the victim's mother, has been charged with murder while the mother has been charged with accessory to murder after the fact.
A week later, authorities released a computer-generated image of the child, using photographs of her remains.
Police were flooded with tips after the image went viral online.

Neighbours said they hadn’t seen Bella for some time, but they didn’t put two and two together until investigators arrived at the baby’s home this week.

Because Bond has had past trouble with the Department of Children and Families, they figured that little Bella had been taken into the state's custody.

“She (the mother) tried to be responsible, but she was on drugs,” neighbor Yessiomora Torres told WMTW-TV. “She talked slurred, she’d come out and smoke a cigarette, her daughter would be crying.”
McCarthy, who is not biologically related to Bella, is in custody at a Boston-area hospital, where he’s been staying for reasons unrelated to the case, Conley said.
The child’s body will be returned to her biological father.

ASARI DOKUBO: BUHARI REPRESENTS DARKNESS, NIGERIA HAS NO FUTURE UNDER HIM

Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has failed to meet the expectation of the people as it lacks any focus to reposition the nation. In this interview, he speaks on a lot of issues. Excerpts:

President Muhammadu Buhari has spent 100 days in office, what are your reflections on the effort of his administration so far?
We are all here and we have seen that the government of President Buhari has no direction. The government so far has achieved nothing but to make noise. All sorts of lies are being told that power is stable. I do not know where power is stable because where I am staying, there is no power. It may be stable in other places but maybe it is a punishment to us. Perhaps, we are among the seven per cent that did not vote for him, so we are being punished. He has not built anything and there is no policy thrust. There is no economic policy and there is nothing in place to show that a government is in power. Somebody is managing the country as a sole administrator. This is how Hitler came. Everybody who supported him was applauding him until it was too late.
What is your take particularly on the issue of appointments, which many believe is lopsided in favour of the North?
I am not interested in the issue of appointment and I am not expecting that he should appoint me. If he does not find his followers and those who supported him among our people worthy of appointment, why should I speak for them? They betrayed us. So, if it is the reward for their treachery, so be it. I am not interested. They knew him. They knew that this is what Buhari is before they brought him and said we should vote for him and they led him to power. So, whatever they are doing, they knew that this is the way he would behave. Why should I bother? If he likes, he should appoint his children. I do not care. That is their business and so how does that affect me.
In your calculation, what is the future of Nigeria under President Buhari? In the next four years of Buhari’s administration, what are we likely to see?
Nigeria has no future under President Buhari. There is no more rule of law since this administration came on board. So, because Akwa Ibom is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state, the State Security Service (SSS) would invade the state Government House and do whatever pleases them. That is democratic sacrilege. The tribunals in Rivers State, they would just go to the tribunal and find out that the chairman has been changed and that a new chairman has been brought in place of the former one. Just all sorts of things go on and people have no respect for the rule of law. The court would give an order and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under President Buhari’s nephew, Mrs Zakari would give a different order. So, these are the issues and I think that what President Buhari is doing has vindicated most of us who said that this man is not even qualified to be a councillor let alone being the chairman of a local government. And we are now talking about the president of Nigeria. It is an assault, an affront on Nigeria that a man like this is made the president of the federal republic of Nigeria. We are becoming a laughing stock. When people are celebrating him, we just laugh. Seriously, Nigeria is becoming a laughing stock among the comity of nations. He goes somewhere and he calls somebody a different name and he commits all sorts of blunders and then people are saying there is progress in the country since he came. How can there be progress when the economy of Nigeria has almost collapsed. I saw it on CNN that the economy of Nigeria has shrunk by 25 per cent in the last three months. So, in four years, how would the economy be under President Buhari’s administration?
Even though you are from Rivers State, as an Ijaw man, what do you foresee of the outcome of the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa State?

For me, talking sincerely, President Buhari’s government does not have respect for the rule of law; this is a government that is thoroughly disconnected from democratic norms. It has control of the Nigerian Police, the Armed forces, the Daura SSS, the INEC and other institutions. They are going to manipulate the process to capture and conquer Bayelsa State. But I know the Ijaw people. You do not dare the Ijaw people. You do not push the Ijaw people because when you push the Ijaw people, when they charge back at you, it will be very dangerous. I think if President Buhari is sensible, which I do not think he is, he should allow the December 5 election to follow the rule of law. Let the election be free and fair. If there is a free and fair election, Governor Seriake Dickson will win in all the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State.
As an Ijaw man, after the presidential election, how did you feel the day the former president, Goodluck Jonathan conceded power to President Buhari?
I did not support Goodluck Jonathan and I have never been a supporter of Jonathan. I supported something greater than Goodluck Jonathan. I have said it severally that if it is Goodluck alone, I did not support him. It is what Goodluck represented that we supported and that we will continue to support. And everybody is seeing it now. We do not need to be told. Goodluck represents the good light to the people while President Buhari represents darkness. Goodluck represents the downtrodden and disposed people of Kaduna, Adamawa, Borno, Plateau, Benue, Rivers and Akwa Ibom. They voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) but today in Plateau State, they are demonstrating that the Gambari people are killing them. Why? You used your hands to kill yourselves, so why are you demonstrating? What are you talking about? You deserve it? In Benue State, they are also shouting; you deserve it. It is either you voted or you assisted them to rig the election. I felt bad because it has taken us backward. We are way backward. I did not support President Goodluck Jonathan. Since he lost election and left power, yesterday (September 8) during Dickson’s declaration for a second term that I saw him for the first time. I felt bad.
You are saying that you did not support Jonathan when they said you got a lot of security contracts from his administration to secure the oil pipelines?

Let them go now. I think that they are freezing people’s accounts. Let them go and be looking for my own bank accounts to freeze. I must tell you that Goodluck is a good man as a person. Let me tell you; the truth is that the Ijaw people ought to be abusing Goodluck, the Itsekiri people ought to be abusing Goodluck, the Urhobo people ought to be abusing Goodluck and all Niger Delta people ought to be abusing Goodluck. That is the truth of the matter. On the contrary, Nigerians ought to be praising Goodluck because he did everything for Nigeria. He did not do anything for us. We stood because he represented to us something greater than himself as a person. So, if Goodluck had handed over to somebody else, we would have built on this. I am talking about a situation where Nigerians would be equal and where Nigerians would have access to power. No group of Nigerians would feel that they would lord it over other people, saying they are born to rule. That was what we fought for and which Goodluck represents and not just because we were supporting him because he is Goodluck. But not when a leader considers himself other than the people who are backing him, Goodluck was talking about his safety, he was not talking about the safety of Marilyn Ogar who stood firmly but lost her job. He was not thinking about all the military men who are being retired and the policemen who are being harassed. All these people stood for him based on principle. We stood for him based on principle because we know that he represents the truth and these people represent total darkness. And then we are all seeing it. We are reasonable bystanders. When they do anything, we clap hands.
