Ex pension boss Maina faults EFCC for declaring him wanted, says he was never charged by the agency

A day after he was declared wanted by the EFCC over allegations of contract scam and stealing of N2 billion while he was in office, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has released a statement faulting the antigraft agency's decision to declare him wanted.

According to the statement signed by his counsel, Esther Uzoma, the former pension boss has not been served any charges or invitation by the antigraft agency and so cannot be declared wanted

"The EFCC should come clean on the matter of my client, Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina. When I appeared before His Lordship, Justice Kolawole on July 21, I made it clear that the EFCC was yet to file any charge as well as serve any summons on Dr. Maina. It is trite law that you cannot say an accused is on the run when there is no charge preferred against him or any invitation extended to him. During the hearing for the bail application, counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs SAN, wanted the court to direct me to produce Maina in court at the next sitting which I argued that there are clear procedures, which the EFCC is familiar with and should follow. Naturally, the court agreed with my submission on the position of law. Therefore, it is misleading for the EFCC in its statement of Monday to mislead the public that there exists an order for Maina to be produced in court when there is no invitation extended to him talk-less of a charge preferred against him by the commission,” she said. EFCC had on Monday November 2nd, declared Maina wanted for his alleged role in the fraudulent biometric contracts in which himself and former Head of Service, Steve Oronsaye, and two others were accused of stealing over N2billion of pension funds. A statement by the antigraft agency states that Maina was on July 21, 2015 charged alongside Messrs. Oronsaye, Osarenkhoe Afe and Fredrick Hamilton Global Services Limited before a Federal High Court on a 24 count charge bordering on procurement fraud and obtaining by false pretense. “While Oronsaye and two others were in court and pleaded not guilty to the charge, Maina had been at large,” the statement said
EFCC went on to state that when the court heard the bail applications of the accused persons, Maina through his counsel, Esther Uzoma, told the court that he was not at large, and said that the EFCC had never invited him. EFCC says despite many invitations, Maina had refused to honor any and so was declared wanted on Monday.

A Nigerian man caught for trafficking in 210 grammes of cocaine and jailed him for 10 years.

Justice Musa Kurya of a Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted a businessman, Chibueze Oneigbo, for trafficking in 210 grammes of cocaine and jailed him for 10 years.
The judge said the sentence handed down to Chibueze was in line with the issued sentencing guidelines for judges of the Federal High Court, adding that his prison term would start counting from Monday.

The 38-year-old convict, who was arrested with the illicit substance at the Murtala Mohammed Int’l Airport in Lagos, in April 2013, had since August 29, 2013 been arraigned before Kurya.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and was granted a N5m bail with one surety in like sum.
But the NDLEA prosecutor, Mr. Linus Nor, had maintained that Chibueze trafficked in the illicit drug and that he concealed the 210g of cocaine in a black leather bag before he was caught during the outward clearance of passengers on board a Qatar Airline flight.
Mr. Nor said Chibueze violated the NDLEA Act, and to prove his case, he called two witnesses.
In his judgment on Monday, Justice Kurya said he was satisfied that the prosecution had proved its case on the matter beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge ruled, “I have considered all the above, and I am of the view that the prosecution has discharged its burden of proof. I have listened to the plea for leniency by the accused, and have taken into consideration all that has been said.
“In any case, the court is duty-bound to sentence the accused having found him guilty. More so, the court is guided by the sentencing guideline recently released for Federal High court Judges.
“Consequently, I hereby sentence the accused to 10 years imprisonment, from the day of this judgment. The drug exhibits in custody of the NDLEA are to be destroyed within 30 days, if there is no appeal against this judgment.”

She said she became involved in drug trafficking after she suffered an ailment that took away all her resources. She said: “I was married but later separated. I am the only person taking care of myself.”

Shocking : A woman Molested by another Passenger while sleeping during a flight from Dubai....

A woman flying from Dubai to New York City was mo!ested by a male passenger who rubbed lotion on her body as she s!ept, according to federal investigators who say the suspect told flight attendants that the victim “enjoyed it because she did not resist.”
The assault occurred Monday on a 13-hour Emirates flight, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

As detailed by a detective assigned to an NYPD-FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the victim said that she fell asleep about an hour into the flight with the aid of anti-anxiety medication. The woman was seated in row 45 next to Nadeem Mehmood Quraishi, a 42-year-old Staten Island resident.

After sleeping for several hours, the woman awoke and Quraishi asked “whether she had a good nap.” At that point, the victim realized that lotion had been “spread on her arms, chest, and up her legs.” Detective Christopher Caruso added that the woman also noticed that “the hand lotion she had placed in the pocket in front of her seat was missing.”

The woman said that when walking to the bathroom “her vag!nal area was sore.” She subsequently “saw that her underwear had been shifted and that lotion was in her vag!nal area and on her underwear.”

Upon returning to her seat, the woman asked Quraishi where her hand lotion was. After he passed the lotion to her, she contacted crew members.

One flight attendant told investigators that she was notified by a supervisor that “the passenger was crying and trembling” in an airplane galley. The victim reported that she believed that “something happened to her while she fell asleep.”
When the flight atendants questioned Quraishi, he reportedly admitted applying lotion to the woman’s “arms, shoulders, and legs and used the lotion in her vag!nal area.” Quraishi, the workers recalled, said that he thought the woman “needed it,” and that the sleeping passenger “enjoyed it because she did not resist.”

“The defendant also told the flight attendants that he liked it and that it happened to him as a child,” reported Detective Caruso.

Upon the flight’s arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Quraishi was questioned by law enforcement agents. He admitted to “inappropriately touching the passenger, that he knew it was wrong, but he did not specify how he touched the passenger,” Caruso reported.

Arrested for the alleged in-flight s*e x assault, Quraishi appeared yesterday in federal court, where a magistrate set his bond at $50,000. He was ordered to surrender his passport and not leave New York City without the permission of pretrial service officials.
Quraishi, who has managed a Subway sandwich shop in Staten Island, was ordered to have no contact with the victim and was directed to “seek and maintain employment as possible.”
Quraishi is pictured above in a profile photo uploaded this month to his Facebook page. He appears to be posing in an airplane galley with flight attendants.
