A Policemen kills Akure woman politician during scuffle

A 50-year old female politician, Mrs. Ronke Adelugba, was on Sunday night allegedly beaten to death in her house in Akure, the Ondo State capital, by policemen who allegedly invaded her house in search of a suspected criminal.
The woman, who was until her death the Woman Leader of the Accord Party (AP) in Ward 5, Akure South Local Government Area, was allegedly hit with a gun butt and beaten by two of the seven policemen who came to her house after an argument with her.
The seven policemen, who came in a white police Hilux van with registration umber NPF 4236 B, had stormed the house located at No. 1, Akinyemi Street, off Ijoka Road, Akure, after searching a nearby bush for some boys believed to be smoking Indian hemp in the area.
Unable to find anybody in the bush, the policemen then headed to Mrs. Adelugba’s house to see if the boys were hiding there.
However, an argument ensued, with Mrs. Adelugba insisting that only her own children were in her three bedroom house.
Insisting that she would not let her children be arrested without any explanation or warrant, Mrs Adelugba was shoved, beaten and hit with a gun butt and in the process slumped and died.
The policemen then allegedly fled the scene after the residents of the area gathered but the residents later carried the lifeless body of the woman to the Ala Police Station where the policemen came from.

Oshiomhole says 'Buhari’s appointments baesd on merit'

Governor Adams Oshiomhole
Governor Adams Oshiomhole

Against the backdrop of the widespread criticism that trailed the 29 appointments made so far by President Muhammadu Buhari, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has rather commended the President, noting that the appointments were made purely on merit.

According to Oshiomhole, the recent appointments of the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Comptroller General of Customs and Presidential Liaison Officers to the National Assembly, were based on merit and not political sentiments or ethnic consideration.

The governor in a press statement issued and signed on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria, said; “The appointments are based on merit and not political sentiments or ethnic consideration as some tribal jingoists would have us believe.

The Nigerian nation has come to a point where we have to use the best hands to confront the peculiarity of our problems.
“It is not all the time we descend to the level of geopolitical balancing; we need to employ unusual methods to solve an unusual problem.

The level of decay in the country at present requires very seasoned hands and incorruptible Nigerians that would help to
translate the APC agenda of change for the benefit of all Nigerians. We must not reduce governance to political patronage of bread and butter.”

According to Oshiomhole, “rather than condemning the President for taking this bold step, we should commend him for having the uncommon courage to take plausible decisions in the appointments he has made so far, as he settles down for the real task of governance.

“If we must make a huge difference in the lives of Nigerians, things must be done differently. We cannot continue to apply same template in the recruitment of persons and expect different results.

The new appointees are Nigerians who have served the country in different capacities before now and deserved every bit of our cooperation and support to make them excel in their new jobs,” he added.

The Governor who congratulated the recently appointed men he described as having tall credentials, wished them well “in their new jobs of helping to sanitize a system that has become so rotten and corrupt as a result of manifest incompetence and mismanagement.”

father attacks his 3-year-old daughter's killer during sentencing hearing

fight broke out in a Detroit, Michigan courtroom on Friday, as a father attacked the man responsible for killing his 3-year-old daughter during a sentencing hearing.

Dwayne Smith's daughter Jamila died in September 2014, after her mother Jasmine Gordon and Gordon's husband Clifford Thomas took her to the hospital when she stopped breathing.

The couple claimed that the little girl hit her head and then fell unconscious, but experts later determined that the girl's death was a homicide, after suffering physical abuse from Thomas.

Both Gordon and Thomas were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials, but appeared in court at the same time on Friday so that victims wouldn't have to give their statements twice.

Smith was one of the victims in court set to address the couple, but instead of speaking his frustrations he decided to physically attack Thomas.

Video taken from inside the court shows the moment that Smith punched Thomas, as the convicted child abuser was sitting, facing the judge, dressed in a yellow jail uniform.

A fight then breaks out between the two men and sheriff's deputies have to step in to separate them.

After the fight, Smith was ordered out of the courtroom and now allowed to return. However, the judge decided not to hold him in contempt of court, and he was allowed to go without facing any charges for the tussle.

The court took a recess after the fight, but later resumed and both Gordon and Thomas were sentenced.

Jasmine Gordon, 25 (pictured), and Clifford Thomas, 34, were found guilty in separate trial for involuntary manslaughter of Gordon's daughter Jamile

Gordon, 25, was sentenced to seven to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and 14 to 25 years for first-degree child abuse as an aider and abettor. Those sentences will be served at the same time.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Thomas was sentenced to six to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and one to two years for resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Thomas was babysitting Gordon's daughter Jamila and her son while she was at work on September 18, 2014.
She was later rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Doctors found that the little girl had bruises on her head and chest that showed signs of physical abuse.

Will Smith plays the part of a Nigerian guy in the movie 'Concussion '

Check out this movie guys that will acted as a Nigerian.
As if the NFL didn't have enough controversy 10 days from the 2015 season opener between the New England Patriots andPittsburgh Steelers, Sony Pictures just released the trailer for "Concussion," a movie based on the true story of the doctor who discovered the link between football and head trauma.

On the same day NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is scheduled to appear in court opposite Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Sports Illustrated's Peter King unveiled the two-minute trailer in his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback column, and it doesn't exactly shine a favorable light on the league.
Based on the 2009 GQ article, "Game Brain," the film chronicles the real-life story of Dr. Bennet Omalu (played by Will Smith), the Nigerian-born neuropathologist who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — a brain disease brought on by repeated blows to the head — while performing an autopsy on deceased Steelers legend and Hall of Fame center Mike Webster in September 2002.

In the film, Omalu's discovery is met with resistance from the NFL, which correctly viewed his science as damaging to the business of football and allegedly attempted to discredit his work. The conflict of an accomplished man who came to America to pursue his dream, only to be disparaged by those who control the country's most beloved sport, appears to be captured brilliantly by Smith.

The trailer begins with Smith's character saying, "I am the wrong person to have discovered this," and ends with him demanding NFL executives "tell the truth" about a disease believed to be the cause of dementia, memory loss and depression resulting in numerous deaths of football players, including the 2012 suicide of newly inducted Hall of Famer Junior Seau, whose autopsy was also conducted by Omalu.
For anyone who read "Game Brain," the portrayal of the NFL as the film's antagonist should come as no surprise, since Omalu pulled no punches when describing the league's response to his July 2005 study forNeurosurgery entitled "Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in a National Football League Player."
"I was naive," the doctor told GQ six years ago. "There are times I wish I never looked at Mike Webster’s brain. It has dragged me into worldly affairs I do not want to be associated with. Human meanness, wickedness, and selfishness. People trying to cover up, to control how information is released. I started this not knowing I was walking into a minefield. That is my only regret."
Really, the only surprising aspect of the trailer is that Goodell is played by Luke Wilson, who is apparently going against type after portraying Joe Bauers, the last beacon of intelligence in the 2006 film "Idiocracy."
As for the conclusions we will draw from a film that also stars Alec Baldwin and Albert Brooks, "Concussion" director Peter Landesman addressed any potential controversy in his Q&A with MMQB
I have no position on whether or not people should play football or whether they should have their kids play football. To me, this is a story about making adult choices. Once you have the information — and the information has been obscured for a long time, it’s been buried and covered up by people who don’t want to damage the sport — the information is now out there and I hope this movie brings together the information in a way that the general public can metabolize and now make their own decisions. So now that you know that concussions can kill you and playing the sport can kill you, it’s on every parent and it’s on every college player, it’s on every high school player and professional player on whether you are going to let your child play. It’s the same with smoking, drinking and doing drugs. I like to think in some ways that life is an occupational hazard. Something we do in our life is going to kill us; maybe now, maybe [50] years from now. You have to choose what those things are. We love to drink and be merry and be happy, we know it’s not good for us, but we do it. It’s about making adult choices.
Interestingly, Landesman said he held a private screening for Chris Borland, who recently retired from the NFL at age 24 over concerns about the effects of concussions, and the former San Francisco 49erslinebacker was visibly "shaken and shaking" after watching his worst fears play out on the big screen.
The film is scheduled to be released for the general public in theaters on Christmas Day.

Shocking News : A Man jailed five years for setting pregnant lover ablaze

An Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, on Monday sentenced one Lucky Esonahae to five years imprisonment for setting his pregnant lover ablaze.
The 37-year-old bar operator was arraigned on a count of causing bodily harm.
The charge read, “That you, Lucky Esonahae, on July 6, 2015, at Uwelu Quartres, Benin, in Egor Magisterial District, did unlawfully cause grievous harm to one Stella Isaac, by setting her on fire with kerosene, which cause her bodily harm and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 355(B) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable to Edo State.”

The prosecuting officer, Sergeant Ganiyu Yahya, told the court that the incident occurred at Uwelu Quartres in Benin, and was reported by the victim, Stella Isaac, on July 6, the same day it occurred.
Yahya said Esonahae had poured kerosene on the head of the woman, who was said to be seven months pregnant, lit a match and set her on fire.

‎He said the victim was later rescued by one of her sons and one of her neighbours, who forced the door of her room open, as she had been locked in.
He said the victim, who was later rushed to the Central Hospital where she received treatment, however, sustained burns on her hands and forehead.

The police prosecutor‎ also told the court that Esonahae had earlier accused the pregnant woman of infidelity for allegedly returning at about 6pm from her antenatal and had threatened to kill her before she ran to her sister’s residence.
The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the offence and begged for leniency.
But the presiding magistrate, Igho Braimoh, ‎said the court would not be lenient, adding that “for a 37-year-old man to set a lover on fire leaves much to be desired.”
She, therefore, sentenced him to five years imprisonment with hard labour.
