Muslim Groups says 'We will fight President Buhari, if he bans Hijab'

Some Muslim groups have said they will use every lawful means to resist any attempt by President Muhammadu Buhari to place a ban on veils for Muslim women in the country.

These Muslim groups which include the Muslim Rights Concern, Muslim Ummah of South-West of Nigeria and Muslim Students Society of Nigeria told Sunday Punch on Saturday that the proposal by the Federal Government along with some West African leaders was unacceptable.
President Buhari along with other Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African Countries had on Friday called for a ban on all dress codes that tend to hide people’s identity.
The Federal Government was part of a meeting held during the week by the Economic Community of West African States which issued a communiqué on Friday after the two-day meeting calling for a ban on face veils as the region contend with the challenges of terrorism, particularly from Boko Haram.
In separate telephone interviews with a Punch correspondent, the various Islamic bodies stated that the proposed ban on Muslim dress codes was unacceptable.
The National Amir of the MSSN, Muhammad Jameel Muhammad, stated that the proposed ban or restriction would not be accepted by Muslims. He said; “We are making our position known next week (this week). We will not allow our fundamental rights to be trampled upon. We will use every possible lawful means to ensure that the proposed ban does not happen. We are ready to take the matter to court to defend our rights.”

Speaking in a similar vein, the Director of the Muslim rights group, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said that group does not agree with the idea of banning Muslims’ veils in order to fight against insurgents in the country. According to him, neither the Federal Government nor the ECOWAS has the power to stop Muslims from wearing veils.
“We do not agree with any ban on veil. Muslims are free to use hijab. Every Muslim woman has the right to. Banning of the veil is not a solution to countering terrorism. I don’t agree any form of such a ban will be acceptable to Muslims. The country’s security agencies should know what to do to curb terrorism.
“Banning a particular dress of Muslims is not the way to go. They do not have the power to ban it. ECOWAS does not have the power to ban the culture of a people,” Prof. Akintola said.
The Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, Professor Dawud Noibi, told Sunday Punch that the veil used by Muslims all over the world including Nigeria is sensitive to the values of Islam and Muslims.
Noibi said, “I would imagine that veil is something very sensitive to the values of Muslims and Islam. It is something Muslims hold very dear – proper dressing by women; it is part of the Islamic injunction.
“Some other ways of preventing terrorism should be sourced (by the Federal Government). I said this as a general comment because I have not read the communiqué. Religious values (as the use of veils by Muslims) require very careful handling.”

Man Rapes 24-year-old Facebook Lover with First Meeting

A 26-year-old man, Taiwo Oluwatobi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly luring his Facebook lover to his house, and raping her.

A 26-year-old man, Taiwo Oluwatobi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly luring his Facebook lover to his house, and raping her.
Oluwatobi had met the 24-year-old victim, identified only as Temitope, on Facebook. He allegedly lured her to his friend’s rented apartment in the Alagomeji, Yaba area of the state to collect N15,000, during which he raped her.
The visit was Oluwatobi and Temitope’s first meeting.
The victim, who worked as a printer in the Mushin area, told Oluwatobi, who she reportedly met on Facebook around June 2015, that she needed N15,000 to settle a debt. The suspect invited her to Alagomeji, to meet each other and also collect the money.
Temitope arrived at the apartment around 6pm and left at about 8pm, during which Oluwatobi allegedly raped her.
The victim reported the matter to the Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba. And Oluwatobi, who hails from Ila Orangun, Osun State, was arrested on Tuesday, December 1.
According to the police, the suspect, said to be a graduate of a university in Oyo State, was also a suspected member of the Buccaneers’ Confraternity.
It was gathered that the police also arrested the suspect’s friend, Adenuga Adedayo, in whose apartment the rape allegedly took place.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Oluwatobi, who worked as a caterer, said he had a consensual sexual intercourse with Temitope, adding that he saw the lady off when she was going back home. He said he was shocked that she reported the sex as rape to the police.

He said:

“We met on Facebook some months ago. From Facebook, we began to talk on the telephone. That day was the first time we would meet, and we had a sexual intercourse. She does printing jobs and she stays in the Mushin area.
“She had asked me for N15,000, saying she had a debt she needed to settle. I invited her to my area. After the intercourse, she went to the police to say I raped her. She was the one who told the police that I was a cult member.“The reason for her coming was that I promised to give her N15,000 to settle someone she owed money. We had sex and at about 8pm, she left. My friend was not at home that time and I see no reason to tell him that somebody visited me.“I joined the Buccaneers Confraternity when I was in 200-level in the university. I was just a member. After leaving school, I quit the group.”
The friend, Adedayo, from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, denied any knowledge of the rape, saying he housed Oluwatobi for a week when he (Oluwatobi) said he had a job to do in the area.
He said:
“The police accused me of housing a cultist and his girlfriend, but I did not know about the incident. I work in the Apapa area as a teacher. I did not know he is a cultist. He had come to me to assist him with accommodation, as he had a job in our area. That was in the last week of November.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone on the incident, Punch reports.

Fuel scarcity to end in February 2016

DESPITE receiving N413 billion in subsidy claims, petroleum marketers may have suspended fresh importation of petroleum products, Daily Sun learnt yesterday.
The development, according to some importers, who pleaded not to be named, may have been responsible for the unabated fuel scarcity nation-wide.
Indeed, some marketers told Daily Sunyesterday that the scarcity could linger till February 2016. Specifically, they said the alleged plan by the Federal Government to remove subsidy on petrol next year and commence full deregulation by January 1, is already causing ripples among marketers.
The marketers, who claimed to be in full support of the deregulation of the downstream sector, lamented that the secrecy surrounding its implementation and take-off date is already causing uncertainty within the sector. “Marketers are not against deregulation. But deregulation must be planned for. It must not be a hasty decision. We are entities that invest a lot in importation of petroleum products. If a decision that is to affect us must be taken, then, we must be taken into consideration. For now, uncertainty pervades the sector,’ ’an importer said.
A source said Nigerians are not considering the vagaries involved in deregulation. There are speculations that with deregulation, a litre of petrol would sell for N97, which is a possibility on one hand. But considering the current price of crude oil which sells for about $38 per barrel, what if this price slides further in the weeks to come and the permutation declines to less than N87 for a litre, who bears the loss?
The source said all these certainties surrounding the downstream sector have further dealt a debilitating blow on the current fuel scarcity. But the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, in a swift response to douse tension on the plan to increase petrol price to N97, denied such intention by government. Kachikwu, who is also the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), however, advised Nigerians to dispel such insinuations
He said the discourse has long left the realm of subsidy removal to a more scientific price modulation approach which entails an elastic price mechanism regime to be reviewed periodically to reflect the prevailing international price of crude.
He explained that when operational, the novel price modulation system will place a N97 per litre cap on the price of fuel to ensure that Nigerians are insulated from the vagaries of the global crude price.
“I did not say that refined petroleum products will sell for N97 per litre next year. I said between a band of N87 and N97 we are going to be looking at prices and today, the prices are largely close to N87. So, there is no need to change the price,’’he said
The minister noted that to determine the price of petroleum products in future, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority (PPPRA), will undertake quarterly review of the crude market situation.
“I have not put a static figure. PPPRA will have to do the calculation to be able to announce what price of PMS (petrol) will sell for in January; but we do not anticipate any major shift because of the price of crude today,’’ he noted.

Suspected cultists rape DELSU undergraduate, others

SUSPECTED gang of rapists on Saturday raped an undergraduate of the Delta State University in Abraka.
It was gathered that the victim identified as Cecilia (surname withheld) of the Department of Sociology was among four other girls who surrendered themselves to be raped by the suspected rapists.
The rapists numbering over 20 were alleged to have ambushed the girls on their way home from evening church service.
Although three other victims were said to have escaped after the first round of sex, Cecilia, the last victim, could not as the rapists allegedly swooped on her after she was threatened with gun before she was raped.
Another version of the story alleged that some of the girls, who were raped, were members of a cult group called Ake Confraternity and did not know that rape was part of the initiation rite.
The victims, according to sources, only knew when they got to the initiation ground, where they were threatened that anyone who refused would be killed by other members.
But the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident, said the police stormed an uncompleted building where a victim was being raped by a member of the gang.
Four other girls, according to the PPRO, were waiting for their turn as part of the initiation into a cult group.
Kalu disclosed that four of the suspected rapists were arrested while the girls were rescued and the severely injured victim taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The Divisional Police Officer, Abraka Division, received information that a girl was crying in an uncompleted building in the bush.
“Based on the report, detectives stormed the building and found out that a cult group known as ‘Ake’ was conducting initiation of new members and that one of the girls was being raped as part of initiation rites while others were waiting for their turn to be initiated.”
