The father of two young refugees whose bodies washed up on a beach had tried to keep hold of them as he clung to the side of an upturned dinghy but watched the waves wash them away.
Little Galip, five, and Aylan Kurdi, three, were on an overcrowded boat filled with refugees fleeing the war in Syria when it capsized shortly into the crossing to the Greek island of Kos.
Both boys died in the sea alongside their mother, Rehan, while their father Abdullah survived. Today he arrived at a morgue in the city of Mugla to say his final goodbyes.
Aylan and Galip, who were not wearing life jackets, did not stand a chance when the boat overturned in the dead of night, some 30 minutes after it set off from the holiday resort of Bodrum in Turkey.
The family - who fled the war-torn Syrian city of Kobane to start a new life in Europe - had clung to the side of the boat, and while Mr Kurdi tried to keep hold of his loved-ones, they were washed away, according to Jenan Moussa, a reporter at Arabic Al Aan TV.
All 17 passengers were flung into the Mediterranean, and despite the calm water, Galip and Aylan drowned.
Their lifeless bodies, still clad in tiny T-shirts and shorts, washed up on Ali Hoca Point Beach in Bodrum today and boatmen alerted the authorities.
